No, the game depends on at least some actions by your character, especially in the early game. There would be no way (or at least it would be insanely difficult moving your starting burner miner back and forth) to mine that initial coal and iron to get your factory started.

There was a plan on the developers roadmap a looooong time ago for a late game RTS mode, once you had roboports and construction bots you’d hop into a building a control your base from that.

Like I said, it was a long time ago, and I dont think it’s there still. Probably been dropped as it’s not necessary (a player with power armour with powered exoskeletons along with a base entirely paved with concrete is incredibly fast, and trains/cars make it even faster to get around) and blueprints pretty much mean you can schedule even the largest base expansions with little effort (try watching thousands of construction robots heading out to build new walls, expand the concrete platform, etc. without feeling like a god).

There is mod for this. Because it is great game so it has mod for almost anything.

Satellite Uplink Station mod has iirc option in mod options to allow you to control things with your character sitting in that building when using it (despite its description saying that you can´t).

Only thing is that it is quite late game tech so you would have to cheat it somehow to get it early if that is your goal. Probably easiest is to rewrite few lines withint that mod itself (any common program for editing text like wordpad is sufficient for that)

Other than that there is probably some way to use console in game to enable that tech without research

Well, there kindof is already, once you've teched up to roboports. Using the satellite view (max zoom on map, then zoom once more whenever you're within radar-covered area), you can put down blueprints, which makes the game pretty much play out like an RTS.

You can do satellite and roboport creep with the blueprints to access areas you don't yet have access to.

Instead of keeping one of every item you wanna place on your hotbar, you'd replace those with a blueprint of that item.

In the beginning it was disorienting having a physical character to control, since I'm used to base-building games where you don't. But this game kind of depends on your ability to craft things from your inventory, and physically run around to place them. It would require a full rewrite of how the game fundamentally works in order to switch it to RTS mode.

Not really, since there is the Edit Mode that already have a lot of this incorporated. Just need to switch out the instantaneous receiving of whatever product you click on for a crafting request.

Though the handcrafting part does need some handling. Like you would need to start with at least one assembler, and some way of making it operate if you were to start right away in a RTS mode.

You can use concole commands to achieve this. If you type "/c game.player.character=nil" into the console you will "detach" from your character model and can move the camera around freely. You will loose all your inventory though, so put everything you want to keep into a box first.
Also note: console commands will disable achievements for that save!

Just replace the player character graphics with that of a building and take away the ability to move, and bingo - you've just created a "construction yard" building.
Almost everything else you need can be handled via "personal inventory", then.
