Really struggling to find crude oil...

It does. Look for a neon pink, it's always in small pools.

Yep it's the neon pink squares for oil deposits on the aerial view of the map. Once you find a location, you may have to clear obstacles like trees to find the black ooze looking pools you put the pumpjack on like a miner on top of ore/stone/coal.

When in the area, hold a pumpjack in the hand (the cursor) to see a yellow box outlining the black ooze. The box will be visible through obstacles like trees as well.

My thought excactly. Oil can be faaar away from spawn.

I founf it but yesterday when I was wandering about looking for it, I couldn't see any anywhere I assumed it was because I didn't have the required technology yet like Civ.

No tech required to see it. If it's not in the starting area, you will need to either physically be there or have radars scanning for it though.

I find the default setting to be very difficult, and lately I've been using a high frequency on oil fields. It just works better for me. Also, if you don't like the map you are given, there is nothing wrong with starting over.

I've done default oil settings and didn't find an oil spot for.... perhaps 5 minutes of running. Since I had hundreds of nests between me and that ONE spot, I started over.

On a side node: I really enjoy the mods RSO and Angels Infinite Ores together.

I think the RSO mod, among the other balancing it does, gives you a couple oil patches in your starting area.
