Keyboard shortcut to pick up a few items
I'm going for the lazy bastard achievement so everything is being produced and stored in boxes.

Is there a shortcut to pick up 1 or a few items at a time instead of the whole stack? Certain things like miner drills, boilers etc I don't need a full stack at a time.

You can pick up the whole stack with left click or half the stack with right click.
Then you can move just 1 of that thing to your inventory with 1 right click and put the stack back where you found it.

If you really just need 1 but don't want to do all that, you can stick an inserter after the box to move stuff out of the box so you get 1 of that thing on the ground.
Then you can hold F and walk over to pick it up.

What I usually do is open the thing that has the items, pick up the whole stack with left-click, and then right-click in my inventory to drop the exact items I need, and then left click back in the storage to put the rest of the stack back.

Unfortunately for this method, if the storage box is set to a restricted amount right from an assembler, you get the assembler making more while you're taking the few out you need. Thus if you take too long you end up with more than your chosen limit in storage.

If the box is restricted you can drop the rest back on one of the "restricted slots". OK the assembler et all will refill the slot that you emptied but the worst that that means is that you will have 1 extra stack in the box.

Thanks for the replies. While not what I was hoping for, this is a reasonable work-around.

If you feed to a chest you can always just grab from the assembler itself, since it will only have a few in the output slot. But yes there is no perfect method sadly.

true but you can place it by hand back into the red zone.
