What is Factorios end goal? What's the point of automating everything?
Hello,

I have never reached the late game in Factorio due to me alwys quitting after a while because I don't really see a point in playing considering there isn't much of an endgame in my optinion.

I know it's possible to fire a rocket, but that's the purpose of that?

I'm not trying to ♥♥♥♥ talk the game because the game is amazing and I love the concept I just need something to motivate me.

Please let me me know if there's anything I've missed, what is the end game like?

Scenario: I've researched everything. I've got 100% for the red, green, blue and purple. What do I do now? What's the point with continuin on the same map?

I hope this all makes sense.

Thank you.

Expand, make as large factories as possible, etc. You can also try to defeat all of the Biters and Worms.

It's a sandbox game, there isn't really a point.

Thanks for the comment.

This is the problem with me. I don't see a point in continuing to expand if I already have everything automated and this it's difficult for me to come back to the game,

I was afraid that was gonna be the correct answer.
I love the game and I really want there to be an end goal but I can't really see it.

I don't know, it's just a feeling I have with this game,

I know what you mean. I simply can't play it anymore without a concrete goal either, but I have put about 2,000 hours into the game in total on and off Steam, so I can hardly complain.

At the end of the day. I'm ver happy I bought it, it's a fantastic game and it deserves more attention.

Since it is a sandpit I make my own goals. So at the moment I am trying to get a couple of the more obscure Steam challenges. I also adjusted the game settings to create a map which sets up challenges, such as faster evolving biters and a need to expand and make trains.

I am also trying to get some kind of understanding about optimal layouts and methods and in due course may try to complete the game in as short a time as possible or develope a laser gun which can one shot the biggest biters.

I am still only at 200+ hours. I expect I will exhaust my interest eventually but for now its fun.

As for an end game, I would quite like to be able to get into the space craft and escape the planet, perhaps to land on another planet with bigger challenges using only the equipment I brought with me in the spacecraft! I am glad it is open ended though.

Have you looked at it with mods?
There#s a ton out there, from full conversions (or close to that)like Angels or Bob's mods, to many smaller things changed or added.

The 'end goal# is launching a rocket, after that it#s just 'more', but launching the first rocket is pretty much a big goal, because you need to do so many things for that.

I personally enjoy setting myself a 'goal# for afactory and building it to that goal.

For example i recently build a factory capable of launching rockets automatically (playing with infitie resoruce mod, so a factory once build can theoretically keep doing whatever it is doing indefinitely) that uses trains for transport nearly exclusively, without any belts (except early on before trains become usable obviously).

Another time i build a factory using the KS power mod, with the factory running entirely on coal burning (and coal burner furnances for smelting).

That sounds good. I should definitely try to setmy own goals and challenges.

That sounds pretty cool. I've never used the infinite resource mod and I've only ever launched one rocket.

I have seen a ton of mods and I've tried a fair few as well. Definitely makes the game better.

For most of us, the joy in the game isn't the destination, but the journey. Once you have researched all, it is fun to start over, trying the game out differently.

Have you played it on the latest patch? You mention the 4 - old - research pack colors. The update that you SHOULD be on changes most of the science recipes, increases the pack colors to 7, and adds a few new things (infinite research in a few fields, nuclear power). These serve to make the game wildly different from how it was before.

Thank for taking the time.

No, I haven't tried that actually. Thanks for letting me know. I will make sure to do a new playthrough of the game!

You should also realize that, currently, Launching a Rocket is just a placeholder for "Endgame". The Devs, last they mentioned Endgame, were not happy with it; thus the Rocket became a gateway to Space Science and infinite research.

Basically you got a couple of options IMO. You either go for Inifnite Research and try to see just how far down it you can go; it gets to be a massive undertaking. Or you start using Mods and find ones that "re-invent the wheel" thus changing the experience.

Personally I just am not satisfied with Mods; I've gone with popular ones like Angel's + Bob's and, IMO, all it does is obfusticate the game. Many people like it but I find it boring, I tried a few "Biter improvement" Mods and didn't like those either; it made the Biters facesmashing hard or just super uber annoying.

TLDR: Overall it's either go Infinite Research, use Mods or set your own goals. Personally; I just stay on Vanilla and keep trying different layouts or focusing on making as small a Factory as possible. I've also tried playing some PvP and CoOp games, so far I only really enjoy playing Wave Defense. Hopefully the Devs will add what they mentioned in FFF#74.

obfusticate..

never seen that word before

I'll spare you the google search. :spazwinky:

Obfusticate essentially means: "To make more confusing than needed or to obstruct the truth".

So, IMO, Bob's + Angel's just makes the game more complicated for the sake of making it more complicated. It doesn't really change gameplay and just makes you work more/harder for pretty much no reason except to work harder. I understand why people could enjoy that; I just don't lol.
