In fairness they seemed to have purchased it now, can you honestly say you've never pirated anything?
Ah I see, I hadn't considered that, I'd be very surprised if they did anything. I expect steam would take issue in talking about how to and where to get pirtaed games from.
Before Steam refund system I used to download free version to check the games out, because false advertising is very common and plenty of unfinished never ending early acess games.
So its perfectly fine to use pirated save on legal copy with no issues.
As a form of demo it's understandable as long as you actually have interest in buying the game because of it. That's actually beneficial to developers as many wouldn't otherwise buy it, so there are indeed 2 sides to piracy.
