It is the only solution.
If you aren't averse to using mods, there's Flow Control[mods.factorio.com] which adds straight, elbow and T-junction pipes which only connect on 2 (or 3 for the T pipe) sides.
Its not the iron, its the way your oil production area is layed out. If you are careful, you can easily do it with the vanilla pipes.
However, if the vanilla game had a few more pipe options, then the pipe system would be more intuitive for newer players, imho.
I don't think it's unintuitive to build pipes that don't touch.
And it gets even more of a pain when you add in mods that add more fluids in the mix. Now if they made it so unsupplied pipes glow slightly to help with setting up the pipes that would be terrific.

i've thought that. the inserters i can see. but this crosses over into frustration for me. lol
lots mods already add longer types underground pipes , 30 or 50 but yeah they should , mostly becouse mods hard balance it , 30 and 50 pipes cost linery how normal should , just more often then not you will never use "all the leanght" i think its fair
