grid snap?
not sure why, but all of a sudden while bleuprinting out new tracks my snap on placement has increased to every 2 squares. This of course is seriously messing with my OCD not to mention making it impossible to line things up.

That seems unlikely - it has been this way since I've been playing Factorio.

Any blueprint that contains train tracks will automatically snap to every second tile because that's how tracks are placed. If you want to place things independent of the tracks, remove the tracks from the blueprint.

it must be some difference with N/S vs E/W when placing track blueprints then. Maybe I've never noticed it before.

Nope. Blueprints containing track are aligned to a 2x2 tile grid. Orientation doesn't matter. When building "stations" or placing any object which you expect to be near a track, place some track first to determine the alignment of the grid.

That seems likely.

Also, while tracks are placed on a 2x2 tile grid, the space between train cars is one tile (i.e. the "stride" between adjacent cars is seven tiles). So if you make a blueprint for a one-car loading/unloading "bay", and include the track in the blueprint, it will only be aligned correctly for either odd cars or even cars.
