You could whip up your own and contribute to the mod database.. I'm sure it would be welcome for folks taht don't like the graphics that come with the game!

A couple of the more popular mod packs add quite a bit of good looking content and rather deep gameplay. Check these out:

https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Arch666Angel
https://mods.factorio.com/mods/YuokiTani

And to get Arch666Angel's mods working you'll need:

https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Bobingabout

Install is a breeze, instructions are linked right at the top of the page. Enjoy!

I'm surprised nobody linked WaiTex yet.

HD textures for all vanilla items

0.15 will have HD textures (for most graphics) that will look much better than WaiTex but it is a start.

Depends on what you mean by HD. It's a 2d, top-down, sprite-based game. "HD" or "better textures" is just going to make the objects have sharper, less blocky edges when you zoom in on them. From a zoomed out perspective, you're going to see very little change no matter what texture pack you're using.
By hd i mean way higher res than vanilla. For example skyrim with1k, 2k and 4k textures. (i'm a sucker for high res textures.

WaiTex is the same res as stock textures but with some smoothing to reduce blockyness. 0.15 will start to have some real hi-res textures... I can't wait.

Yep. Some HD textures arealready in the game. However, everything is supposed to be HD in 0.15. (With an option to toggle it off for perfomance issues on older computers).

HD textures are not in the game yet, except for the technology icons maybe.
From the roadmap (and afaik still correct):

0.15
High res graphics introduction (This means just some parts of the game will be in high res in this version)

0.16
More high res stuff
Alright. And is there a date for the 0.15?

The last from the devs was an optimistic estimate of end of March, but I think it will be sometime in April.

1k; 2k; 4k; etc, is a reference to the bitmap (or what ever image format is used) pixel size squared for wrapping 3D models mesh. So 1k is 1024 x 1024. 2k is 2048 x 2048 and so on.

Back in .11 it was already discussed that they would be producing 2x renders of the 3D assets that make up our beloved Factorio's sprites. It was talked about being released as an official mod so people with lower memory GFX cards could play without suffering if they did not want to run them. It never came to be, but what we are seeing now is the same 2x renders and reworked assets for .15

This is the Friday facts from 2014, had to dig to find it. It shows the Car and Steam Engine as examples in the original and the 2x render.

I am guessing but I think the reason, aside from just the amount of work that is put into this game, it was put on the backburner until such time as 4gb cards were a common thing and or they found a better way to prevent a negative impact on the players.

Personally if your playing factorio for fancy graphics I think your missing the point. I would wager most who really enjoy the game would easily forgo graphic upgrades for expanded meta gameplay. Thats just my 2¢
