Spawned in the middle of a lake...
So I had just started a new world, and it somehow spawned me on a two tile island in the middle of a lake, making it impossible to reach land because I was stuck on the island. I'm not really sure how to get the developers to see this, but I just figured I'd say something here so that I could help the devs make sure this doesn't happen anymore. Thanks!

Since the world is randomly generated, that can happen, it is no bug. Just start a new map.

If you progress further into the game, you can research "landfill", which makes it possible to replace water tiles with land.

Adding onto that, I believe that Landfills are available at the start of the game, but you'll need 50 red (1) and green (2) science packs in order to fully research them, and when landfills are used on water, the land cannot be removed, so if you need water sources, be careful on where you place them.

was, that you need to build a lab and the science packs, which is not possible if your island is too small, or doesn't hold enough resources ;)

I know it is not technically a bug, and I also am not smart enough in coding yet to be able to actually tell you anything useful about map gens, I just didn't know if this was something you guys actually knew happened and were trying to fix. Also, I couldn't really walk anywhere because the island was too small, so yeah, no resources at all, lmao. Great game by the way! :)
its a gem , it happens atleast once to all players on factorio at some point , also happened to me in minecraft like 3 times ever , small/tinyisland in big ocean , no terrain in sight

just generate new map with new seed

you can fill water with reserch , there is also mod who lets you do that instantly but in both scenarios you need lots of stone for it

so if you spawn in middle of lake with like 1-20 titles of ground nothing would help you anyway

Because it would be way to easy to just create long moats instead of walls to keep the biters out, as they can't move through water.
But there's a mod that gives you that ability: https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Riley19280/Waterfill

Moats would be interesting, but would need to go along with an entire enemy overhaul. Flying enemies to get over walls/moats, swimming enemies, burrowing enemies -- and weapons specifically designed to counter each.

The fact that water is completely impenetrable to enemies -- AND a useful resource for the player -- makes it a bit cheaty to plop it down wherever you want.

It's not even technically not not a bug.
Or... it's not a bug. It's a feature :)

flying biters would be interesting. i find vanilla lacking once you get flamethrowers and the behemoth biters. while a nice weapon, i find it lacking for the really large nests and almost like at that point the game gives up on your weapon advancement :(

as to water, i understand the whole moat issue, but I've had maps where water spawns were rare as hell or simply horridly placed. so it's my OCD screaming for the ability to put source water where I would like it.

That depends what difiulcty you play , im getting attacked by 100-200 behemots per wave/attack and on constant 80-120 yellow alerts at all time

and no , vanilla turrets are not enough to survive that

the better question is how do you best defend your base with vanilla or even expand your borders out

Three rows of laser turrets are more than enough to defend against vanilla biters. (pair that with a 2-tile-thick wall). If you are really having trouble, create a maze of pillars for them. (Behemoths have to zig zag).

This is a single laser line (mid-game):

so for like my expanding blocks I could probably use a double thick "wall" or turrets instead of a single to push my border out farther.
