How can i scan my map seed for ressource patches?
Hey there.

I'm again on a map without any oil patches in closer range. And again i did notice that too late.

After doing some research i've found out, that there must be some oil anywhere. It's just far far away. Than i've found a Forum-post, where one guy, i don't know how, did scan the map seed for another guy and told him where he can find oil on his map.

So i want to ask if someone can tell me how to do this?

I don't want to spawn oil patches via command, because i'm trying to get some of the Achievements.

Edit: That's my mapseed:

just for your reference... you can create a NEW game with this seed... then use console commands to reveal the map...

I usually go to Custom scenario --> base/sandbox and put in the exchange string, then start the world.
Disable all popups except Always Day. Use the following command (this will increase map generation speed):
/c game.speed = 10
You can then manually look around with WASD while looking at the minimap, I usually do a spiral-like pattern.
Or you can use a command like this one:
/c game.player.force.chart(game.player.surface, {{x = -1000, y = -1000}, {x = 1000, y = 1000}})
For a larger search area replace all occurrences of '1000' with the larger number, note: high values can take a lot of time and use lots of memory, values > 10.000 can't be run even with 16GB RAM.

This is your closest oil spot (10 patches):

The red circle indicates the oil, it's about 2000 tiles out. My player location indicates the starting area.

Holy SHOOOT! Only 10 patches? And more than likely they will be at the 1.5-2.0 range which is low. I would definitely reroll that map.

Or cheat some in. That oil is so far away, you would use more resources that you gain by getting it (ammo, gun turrets, etc VS the time and oil gain).

And the next oil may be that much further away.

Well, building a railway only takes iron, copper and coal of which you have... plenty more than none, so you would be converting resources you have into resources you need (you cannot complete the game without oil) which is not inherently stupid.

Whether you think it's more fun to try or more fun to reroll is another question entirely.

Being stuck in a perpetual robotless state until you fought the entire planet with ineffective weapons to secure 2 drops of oil definitely falls into the "not fun" category I'd say.

This is more the sentiment I was trying to get across. I am just not good at articulating my thoughts.

If I can't see what I want when the game starts I just hit the Restart button. It only takes a few seconds.

There's also a mod that allows to check out the area: https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Klonan/InitialScan

Jesus ... well thats not far far away, thats far far far [...] far far away. (This Reminds me of the Movie Shrek 2 .. far far away. https://youtu.be/basofea2UEs?t=70 )

I was expecting a challenge, but this looks more like suicide.

Thank you all, i think i have to restart ... damn. But it was my fault, i should take care of this right at the beginning.

Special thanks to you daniel0674 for doing the job for me finding the oil!

Thanks guys!

Crude oil was Frequency Very Low, Size Small, Richness Good.

Frequency is especially tricky with oil, very low frequency already means you'll have to go far (as seen) to find any, with Size small it's expected to find only 10 patches there. Good Richness (or Very Good Richness for that matter) doesn't mean much for oil, they'll still decrease to the same 0.1 in the end.

I agree that oil is somewhat scarce especially when decreasing the default settings and it maybe should be increased, medium oil already is a challenge for most people.

They were only about 50% yield (0.5) on average, most of them already below 0.5.

This will only scan an area of 512 tiles in each direction, unless otherwise specified in the control file. When looking for patches it's easier to call the corresponding console command with increasing numbers.

With oil set to good richness? I see higher than that with oil on default richness. Granted, its been a while since I used anything but max oil settings, but 0.5 is really low and what I would expect on poor.

Certainly a reroll map. That is a horrid position and would be an exercise in patience.

Yes i did reroll ... but had to do so many times. Oil is tricky indeed. As you mentioned daniel, even with high richness, the oil Spots were most of the time pretty low. Thats wierd.

Chose High Frequency, and Large Patches as well. Most* people put oil settings on the max across the board.

*Another option is low frequency, but still use Large Patches, so that when you find oil, there will be 50 or 60 spots all together.

Okay i will try this out next time, thank you!
