Mods Folder?
Do we have to install our mods under the C:\Users\GameOverMan\AppData\Roaming\Factorio?

I try to keep my C Drive clean and I installed the game on a different drive for that reason.

Almost every game today allows you to install mods in a mod folder within the game folder. Any way to do this? Having to unhide then clutter up my SSD Drive for mods isnt my idea of ideal. Not in 2017. Thanks

The way Windows works, you'll have a lot of "clutter" on your C: driver, no matter where you install Steam.

Mods go into
NEVERMIND :)

Edit: A LOT of games require/defaults to use Windows standard file locations. On your system drive.

Edit2: LOL! Sorry! Gave the directions for Spintires instead of Factorio. :D

Fixed that for you. It is entirely on Valve and the game developer to choose how they store their game data files. Some games store their game data in whatever library the game belongs to, others store it in APPDATA, and some even use the old Documents method.

It may not be what you're looking for (altough in the long run it may in fact be the best solution) but you could always move your appdata folder to another drive or partition.

I keep my OS as clean as possible as I only have a 250 GB SSD drive for my OS, but 2TB sata drive for everything else. I go that extra mile to keep the drive clean, and after 4 to 5 month, when it does, eventually get cluttered, I reformat. Just did that yesterday, so im good for 5 month.

My mods install here

C:\Users\GameOverMan\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods

I dont see anything for [STEAM_INSTALL_DIR]\steamapps\common\Spintires\Media\

I tried C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common and looked into all sub folders for

F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Factorio

I dont see anywhere other than the directory I listed for storing mods

Yeah, I dont really want to do that as it will cause too many issues, I dont mind moving the My Games Folder, ESO and Elder Scrolls and Fallout 4 love to store tons of crap there, so I have already remedied that, Ill just have to make a reminder to clear my appdata files when I am ready to test different mods.

@everybody, Thanks for the tips and suggestions. Guess I am forced to use the appdata for mod installs, I dont like it, it feels like Windoiws XP tbh, but meh, cant always eat the cake we want :steamsalty:

Sorry about that. I totally screwed up the answer :)

I have the same kind of setup as you ( 128 GB SSD, 1.5 TB HDD ) and mostly do as you do.
But the small amount of data stored in %USERPROFILE% and %APPDATA% doesn't bother me. Even with only 128 GB SSD.

You can put them in some directory on another drive/partition and use a symbolic link (Windows, Linux, OS X) or directory junction (Windows) to point to that location from within the fixed place where the game expects the mods to be.

That is actually correct, but not for the reason you think: In the ancient past, every user could write to C:/Program Files but MS eventually figured out that this was a really bad idea, and forced apps to store user data in user folders instead (that's why you don't save your word documents in C:/Program Files/MS Office).

So what you are actually saying is that you want to go back to Windows 98...

I'm using the method of using a custom shortcut to factorio.exe, and applying the --mod-directory argument to the Target field in the shortcut's properties.

With this, you can choose where you want Factorio to read mods from.
It's formatted as '--mod-directory <path>', where <path> is a regular file path, starting with the drive letter, and folder names seperated by \. If your path has spaces, you also need to surround the entire thing with "".
In my case, mine is formatted as: --mod-directory "D:\Factorio Mod Sets\0.15.x\Main\mods".
(Note that it's enclosed in "" because it has spaces in the folder path)

I believe you can do this directly from steam, though, by adding it to the launch commands (right-click>properties>Set launch options).

All depends on the user. Unless you manually move it, userprofile includes video, music and images. That quickly adds up.

Absolutely. YMMV :)

No, what I am saying is exactly what I said. I would like to see mod support allowing us to store mods in either the game directory or in the game save folder. THAT is actually what I am saying, that IS what I said.

@ everybody else, Thanks again.

Awesome, Ill give that a read when I am done enjoying my game time. Currently playing this survival mod, where I get waves of biters more and more each night, pretty damn fun

But since you mention Windows 98, your comment is actually well timed.
