Starting Rail World
I'm thinking to start Rail World without mods. Would following settings be any good?:

Resources are Rail World defaults expect sizes are medium instead big and richness good instead regular. Are these good settings? Should I left uranium and oil to defaults?

Recipe difficulty: expensive
Techonology difficulty: expensive
Techonology price multiplier: 4x

I'm going to enable enemy expansion
Max group size: 50
Min cooldown: 20 min
Max cooldown: 120 min

Evolution:
Time factor: 0.00000100
Destroy factor: 0.00100000
Pollution factor: 0.00000750

Everything else are defaults. What do you think?

it will be very hard. get very rare fields with very big size and rishness, otherwise you will need so many rails, that the game will be simply annoying.

That looks good to me. Personally I enjoy sprawling rail worlds the most. One thing i will say though is turn off enemy expansion. Theres nothing more frustrating than a nest spawning between you and an outpost. And that will happen frustratingly often. You might also want to make biters peaceful cause otherwise it will be very difficult but thats really up to you.

I used the default rail world settings and I very much enjoyed it. Since aliens are completely unecessary, I kind of wished I'd turned off aliens at the start, but now clearing land of aliens is about the only gameplay I have left to me. I am really REALLY glad for the option to disable expansion though. I'd murder someone if I was forced to put down lines of walls/turrets everywhere to keep back migrating biters all the time.

The slightly improved (but not maxed) ore spawning is pretty good, if you don't mind spreading out fairly far (20-30 seconds by train) to find the decently large rich deposits. I actually like that deposits run out, so having too high a richness annoys me, but not as much as having a tiny patch that isn't even worth a train stop.

Isn't rails the whole point of the Rail World? I tried to play Marathon with Rail World settings (biters enabled) but I think problem was too big mineral fields. I got near my starting zone a huge 6 million copper field. I think it was too large in size. I don't mind if fields are smaller but richer that way you have to establish more outpost and they last longer.

My biggest reason is why I'm starting new game is that biters evolved too fast. There were blue biters everywhere (evolution was 81%) and I didn't even have red chips, tank or laser towers yet. I did feel like I was missing experience to enjoy new technologies because they were obsolete when I did complete them.

Btw. this was my second game. The first game was just short training game and I didn't reach far in tech.

For me aliens are important. Maybe i just have to tune them down little more. Whole point for me is have to survive in hostile world. I would get bored in peaceful game in long run.

I hate the most in this game (and many others) that you only realize after spending 50h in game that your map and settings suck... 50 hours wasted...

It is really hard to get good map settings.

Not going to get them for a long time. I think I'm out of resources before I can get them.

Rail World is just the default mode with different resource/advanced settings, just like the others.

I didn't like it. I thought it would be something similar to what the RSO mod does, but no, even setting the resources to very rare (copper/iron) and rare (uranium/oil/stone/coal) I get them all over the place. For a mode that's supposed to encourage rail systems, it's very flawed.

If you aren't using rails to get resources that are 2 or more radar lengths away.... what are you using?

using rail world and rso, the further away i go, the better the deposits. skip over a few and hit that copper patch with 30+ million ore. the spread is pretty good, I have had to edit the long reach mod i use because it didnt' reach out far enough (10000 units) to let me resupply FARL without going all the way back to the main base.

Don't get me wrong, I'm using them. The problem is with Rail World I get way too many resources in my starting area. One of the reasons I like rare/very rare frequency resource settings is that I enjoy building a base without having too many resources in the way.

FARL is awesome, just like RSO, but I'm going for the Lazy Bastard achievement, so I'm not using mods in my current playthrough.

Huh. I certainly had to focus heavily on trains in order to find a patch far away that didn't drain out in an hour. The patches are rich, sure, but my consumption of them all is so high, that normally huge patches run out quick anyway.
