The shields are to large
i really enjoy using the shields but man every time i bring it out it gives me a headache, i just wish that there can be an minimized shield option that relegates the shield to the bottom left wile it still has the shield present.

i learned recently the holster keybind will hide the shield and allow alt fires for spears and such to function.

It just needs to be placed differently in the first person point of view. All you have to do is see some polished games with riot shields and can almost tell right away what needs to be done. I'm hoping they are updating the shields, reload animations, and other first person gear views sooner, rather than later.

About the only thing you can do is just not wear it or Holster it (Default H) while not in use; or use a Plastic Shield, since that apparently seems to block just as well as any other shield but takes up less visual space.

Since the shield visuals conversation has been done a lot, I'm going to take this moment to instead complain that they introduced the heater shield way too early and it probably should have been used for the upcoming cold anteverse.
Like, it's blocking your screen and making you overheat in a suit, why???

The whole theme of the manufacturing sector is fire weapons, office is makeshift office weapons, and labs is electricity and a surgical equipment feel.

Tesla coils are electricity yet found in manufacturing. I don't get your point. A zone doesn't have to stick to a specific theme and can encroach on other zone themes. And the heater shield just doesn't make sense to be introduced in a place where you're overheating.

I stopped using shields when I realized you couldn't do the right-click zoom thing when holding a pistol and a shield (accuracy skill lv5). Not to mention the equip weight. Now it's been like 100 hours of play since last equipping any sort of shield. Does anybody get any real use out of them?

Person I played with stopped using shields after the heater shield, every time I've picked up a shield and tried to use it ended up feeling more annoying than useful. Even with the ability to block bullets it's largely irrelevant as long as you're circle strafing or just juking the soldiers in general. Probably the most useful for the green exors but I'd entirely given up on shields by that point. Never felt any use for a shield on melee enemies either, because dodging is more free than blocking.

Once your Sprint gets high enough and you are familiar with dodging stuff (and you aren't weighed down too much by loot or armor), you'll find shields really aren't that useful in comparison to other things. I use a shield near the start, because the egg head has the agility of a career couch potato and RMB features are limited, but using the shield still feels bad. The animations and response times feels off and I have to always respond earlier than what I'm used to in other game just to get it to work.

If the animation feedback was better and the timing made more sense, and if readying a shield eventually got faster with whatever appropriate skill, then I'd reconsider using it. This is along with the idle animations not making some shields block too much of your view.

For me any utility the shield might have starts and ends with the beginning of manufacturing. Pests are sidestepped, peccaries are stunned by nets, exors are also sidestepped. At that point the shield is mostly only good at being an in-between to getting the forge armor when the order respawn frequency starts wearing you down, and becomes entirely unnecessary once mugnades are in production.

Maybe they can just add a stun/stagger to the shields to make them more worth wile, the electric one can just get a longer duration.

They just need to do a lot of work on a lot of the animations the combat is so sub par and clunky. When it takes more then a second for the spear to move when you are thrusting it that's a big problem, and no it's not my system this is the only game i see and experience this in. The animation's needs to be smoothed out a lot.

Love the heavy shield other then it literally blocks almost all your view just holding it. Which it needs to be moved more off to the edge of the screen. it should not block your view unless you have it up to block.

And the machine gun nest on the roof with the chopper is so unrealistic when you use the shield to block it sends you backward a very long way like you are being hit by a huge wave. And they need to tone down the aim bot shooting some. Machine gun nests aren't snipers, but they sure do shoot like they are with every bullet.

Maybe before shoving more content they should look at fixing a few of the mechanics first, or fix it and deliver those fix's with the new update. Combat when you have reached high in the perk tree should become more fluid not still be clunky.
had one idea make the shield act more like Rainbow Six Siege's shields. those are probably the most fun shields i've seen done in any video game so far. make it so while holding the shield you could do a shield bash that knocks enemies away and stuns them, less than if they attacked the shield and got knocked back.
shields should reward fortitude XP on blocking.
perhaps shield bashing is unlocked at a certain level of blunt weapons?
same for sprinting while holding the shield up perhaps you add extra bash damage when sprinting and shield bashing allowing for TF2 like shield bashing.
Shield view models are definitely too large / badly placed, especially the charge shield. It's somewhat tolerable with the plastic and heater shields, but since the charge shield extends so far above your arm it takes up about a third of the screen when it's out. And when you're blocking with it, you can't even use the viewport effectively because of how far away from the camera the model appears to be. It makes the charge shield downright maddening to use even though it's actually quite good- the backlash damage from the block shock is more effective than you'd think.
Shields at rest really should be much closer to the edge of the screen and shields being held out should appear closer to the camera- meaning they only take up the bottom part of the screen for small shields and the viewport properly lines up with the camera (and is large enough to use) in the case of the charge shield.

At the moment, shields have at least one niche use; fighting in confined spaces. Circle-strafing doesn't really work that well on the train, or in some of the tighter hallways of the labs and manufacturing.

Charging snipers is also much easier when you have a shield. The one guarding the turret control zone is the best example; not much cover, can't dodge sniper shots, and some of the sprint there is inside the machine gun's arc.

Regardless, I do agree that shields are not great right now. I often find myself trying to justify using them, and mostly just do it for the riot control style points.

They need to get smaller on-screen. If not that, they need to block some amount of incoming damage when not braced - and they need to do it audibly, so the player can tell it's actually their shield putting in work. Otherwise, people will figure it's just their armor.

They should just make your later game shields appear smaller on your screen when not actively blocking. Thats all that needs to be said. c:
