That's likely where the in-game idea came from. Though animal dung from herbivores is better since they eat a lot of plants, which comes out half processed (because plant fibers are tough), and they make a lot of it.
In a pinch I could see using a different source.
It is also mostly irrelevant since the main point is to utilize ingame resources better.
I much rather fling poop at my enemies than eat whatever grows out of it.
