I got the ick once, after a zombie performed the much-beloved maneuver of "spawn behind you and immediately force a grapple". The onset of the disease was so delayed, and the timer so generous, that it had absolutely no effect on my time playing. All I did was put all my stuff in a box by my bed, leap into a pit, and then grab everything back up.
In current circumstances, it's nothing more than an inventory-juggling nuisance. In a possible future hardcore mode, it's a non-negotiable run-ender that only lets you know you've lost a long time after it's happened.
As low a threat as zombies are, given my current parameters it still causes me to be super schizo knowing that being caught off guard once is going to get me bit and then even though I'm not dead then and there I may as well be anyway!
Postponing would be a neat gimmick I suppose but it's mostly unnecessary given the already liberal timeframe as well as the course of action regarding other scenarios.
In the way of a cure, perhaps an IS could be utilized there, a one and done though or an absurdly expensive transference of resources in order to facilitate a second chance, the former possibly lumping on an extended or even permanent effect or the latter merely of a very significant cost both being highly undesirable outcomes but better than death in the event that the player still wishes to continue.
