The first major update is going to have some sort of fluid teleportation, so it isn't too big of stretch to also have an automated watering system.
Also idk how you think it currently isn't worth it. I easily was able to maintain plants (especially after the devs buffed how long they could live w/o water) on the regular at my base. I would eat up, water plants (if new and growing), head out in the morning, explore, loot, head back in the evening, drop off loot, check plants, fight any attack or feed 'The Coworker' and prepare for the next day.
I have the same problem, the early planters run out of water if I go on a salvaging trip to Flathill, and so often the large ones almost out when I get back. I'd love the same kind of upgrade system the workbench has to be available on several other buildings so we could upgrade the garden plots with water barrels and improved sunlamps and such!
