I can't think of any real life material that could store and release energy the right way to launch a railgun bolt though. If it's a crossbow that is. Some Antiverse material might work.
Nah, it's just the crossbow from HL2. The projectile you load is literally a rusty piece of rebar that is placed on some metal contacts (they have a battery) that treats it like a heating element and heats it up really hot.
Could probably add some metal cable and the reinforced wood plank to the ingredient list.
But I don't expect the devs to have to make this crossbow capable of pinning ragdolls to walls (like, it's a FUN effect but not really a gameplay-altering one), but just having it deal a nice hefty chunk of damage that's reliant on weakpoint hits (plus an incendiary damage effect) in exchange for a slower reload time and projectile speed gives it a distinct place in the player's arsenal. Also it acts as a direct upgrade to the makeshift crossbow for people who want to keep using one in the later game.
Conflicting keybind is an issue though, there'd need to be a dedicated ammo type swap button.
