Radiation and spores are both countered by a suit. Something that you should have long before you see your first weather event.
There's nothing grindy or unforgiving about the new system.
Radiation is a key thing most players get used to, and by that point should have already have the tools to handle it.
The Fog effect is the one that's the most dangerous, not so much for the lack of visibility, but for the creature that comes with it.
As for the grind... there is no grind. It is just there, you have one item that covers 2 out of 3 of the events, and other items that can help with one or the other.
Not sure how it isn't immersive. You have dimensional incursion issues throughout the facility, to the point that the environment itself is being contaminated by it as the literal barriers of reality are breaking down. Seems pretty on point to me.
As for me, it still seems pretty casual. After getting a thing to ward off the spooky mist skelly boy, the game seems very forgiving (especially after adding the Dynamic Difficulty system). I agree that the weather events might out live their welcome after the first 15 or so minutes (half an in-game day), but otherwise it isn't stopping me from doing most things.
