There are a couple things to keep in mind for plants.
- When ready to harvest, they stop using water, and the fruit never decays
- From harvest to harvest, it uses 400 ml of water. One Small Plot has a 400 ml tank, and the 2x2 as a 1650 ml tank
This means that if you keep the tanks topped off after harvest, your plants should be fine. Though with the Small Plots you will want to wait a few minutes after harvesting and then top them off, since there does seem to be a rounding error with how much water it uses. This doesn't seem to happen with the Medium (2x2) Plot because of the extra 50ml.The simple fix is just make the tanks on the plots bigger. That's basically what you are asking for.
Maybe there will be a way to connect hoses to things in a future update, which would mean you could connect several plots up to a water tower barrel and only have to refill one thing, rather than several.
Given there is a Small and Medium plot, I do wonder how big a Large plot is. 3x3 or 4x4?
Also making the water level indicator more noticable could help prevent plant deaths.
The thing is, I'm actually fine with the starting planter water limits. Increasing the capacity leaves less room for gradual upgrade progression. Leaving it as it is and adding stepping stones to eventually lead up to some late-game set-up where you don't have to worry about water at all is probably the best choice in terms of gameplay design. The main problem right now is that the medium planter box is the best we can make at this moment, and the idea of stepping-stone extending the capacity by using water coolers on small planters, barrels on medium planters, to maybe water purifier barrels on future large planters? flows a bit naturally and lets them space out upgrades without eventually dead-ending agriculture too early.
