What separates this game from other survival games?
I tend to play a LOT of survival games as its one of my fav genres and I noticed this has overwhelming positive reviews so it caught my eye but I notice a lot of people comparing this to half life and scp in which I have never played or know really anything about either so im curious what makes this game so great and its not just a nostalgia thing since I obviously don’t have any nostalgia with the related games.

Currently I would say 7 days to die or Grounded are my top 2 survival games but I have put so many hours into those I would love another to give a try if its worth it

If you like 7DTD, you will probably like this. It's not quite as combat oriented, but has similar survival elements and a much more enjoyable crafting system. Overall, I would say that this isn't as difficult, but it makes up for it in humor and fun.

Well it's in an enclosed facility so it has a different feeling of being trapped than 'open-world' games do. I think a huge part of it is simply the setting. Combining Half-Life with SCP interests a lot of people. The survival crafting element is honestly secondary to the setting for me.

Well, have you ever played a survival game that actually had properly designed levels and not just heightmap jell-o molds with play structures strewn about?

It plays more like Grounded in that sense, but more linear in terms of map sectors.

Would you say it can be played solo or does it need friends to be enjoyable? I tend to solo a lot of my survival games as my friends aren’t huge into the genre like me

So Half-Life was a ground breaking and ambitious game at the time. It was not only a major update and change to Id's Quake Engine, but was heavily modified to allow for a story to unfold entirely in first person. There was no cut scenes that took control away from the player and all the scripted stuff was done live in the game. Also the way levels were loaded were about as seamless as they could be at the time, with little or no artificial cuts between areas. This type of continuity and immersion was new back then. (though modern games have 'reverted back' to cut scenes)

The general story of Half-Life is that you play a Gordon Freeman (the guy that I use for my profile pic, because I was unoriginal as #$%@ when I was younger, and can't be bothered to change it now) heading to work at a secret research facility, and during a questionable and rushed experiment, all hell breaks lose as the dimensional boundary between two worlds are fractured. You have to (as the promo said) Run, Think, Shoot, Live as you go through a facility that's breaking down as alien creatures floor the place. It departs greatly from FPS games from the time, like Quake and Unreal, as it had an immersive and cohesive story throughout, and (at the time) smart enemy behavior not seen in other games.

SCP is a set of themed writings and stories around the concept of (yet again) a secret scientific organization that Secures, Captures, and Protects supernatural and reality breaking anomalies away from the public eye. This SCP Foundation's goal, sometimes through ethically questionable means, is to maintain the normalcy of real life for everyone else on Earth.

They contain a wide variety of anomalies ranging from the benign, like a happy and friendly slime creature that likes tickling people, eats only candy, and could very likely cure depression (SCP-999), or a literal panacea pill that can cure anything but the origin is unknown and the pills can't be duplicated (SCP-500).

To the silly like a toy truck that literally weighs as much as its real life counter part (SCP-115) and the Eye Pods that are literal pods with an eye on it (SCP 131).

To the questionably dangerous like a vending machine that can vend almost any kind of liquid as a drink when typed into the full keyboard on the side and given money (SCP-294) or a mysterious clockwork device with two chambers that can anomalously upgrade or downgrade any item (or creature) put inside (SCP-914).

To the outright dangerous like a weird sculpture that will quickly move towards you when you blink your eyes or look away and will break your neck when it gets to you (SCP-173) (also the SCP entrie that started it all) and an anomalous humanoid creature that looks like a medieval plague doctor obsessed with a cure of the pestilence, but turns people into a form of zombies instead (SCP-049).

To the fantastically dangerous or overly powerful like the literal capital G God (SCP-343) and an undying ultimate warrior named Able (SCP-076).

And that's just a few of the SCP entries out of literally thousands of them. To risk quoting a meme, there is literally over 9,000 SCP entries, ranging from mediocre to thought provoking, to funny, to mind bending and horrific.

Long story short, there is a bit of that in this game, but nothing overwhelming.

I've been playing single player and I'm having a blast. This game feels less grindy to me compared to others (except for making the hacking tool the first time) and there's just more of an emphasis on exploring the facility and building cool weapons/buildings/traps. It can get a bit rough in "act 2", since a lot of enemies become ranged, but eventually you will be able to overpower your foes.

You can adjust settings to make it a bit more forgiving for single player; I made it so I don't drop items or lose durability on death, as an example.

One thing I will say is do not underestimate traps, especially single player. Most of them can be reused or will recharge and can save your butt. Using a certain trap trivializes an otherwise very difficult early game challenge to the point that I'm certain it's exactly what the devs want you to do to progress.

Not sure how it compares to other games of this type.. but there's just something this one does that has me really hooked. I think it does a good job balancing survival / craft base building mechanics with old school creepy mysterious fps gameplay. (Half life)

Exploring new parts of the lab always has me feeling like "oh.. what's around the corner...", which keeps me progressing, but the way the levels are laid out has a wonderful metroidvania-esque way of opening up shortcuts to make the 'hub' area really feel like home.

Love the visual style. Love the sounds and the music. There's a very subtle air of humor laced throughout as well.

Game reminds me of svencoop so much I miss those days lol.
It's nice having a game of this caliber for everyone to experience another constant reminder that half life 3 needs to be made.
On a comparison note it's up there with prey/system shock, but if people are looking for a much more SCP style game with survival/building etc I highly recommend folks check out "Once human".

i've played both those games and i like them but i prefer AF by a longshot.

It's a magic combination.
Survival, aliens, the half-life touch come Black mesa like, humour, nice graphics.

You see those little category's, and it's a snap buy. Snap, bought.
What? You still not bought it OP? Get a grip.

a lot more linear than most other survival games (a good thing), takes place in industrial/lab/office spaces, has interesting lore and makes exploration fun instead of annoying.

I see they have gone with the Valhiem look.
There is actual level design that makes it feel sort of metroidvania-ish, whereas 7DTD or Valheim (which definitely have their own strengths) are big open worlds where you spend a lot of time walking through very bland expansive landscapes.
