And yes, there is a wide range of settings from keep everything to delete everything, and many points inbetween.
Default is drop what's in your backpack and your worn gear and hotbar items take 10% durability damage upon death.
Back on the topic, there was a couple Hardcore and/or Ironman settings when launched, but they were quickly removed by the devs because they weren't ready to release that yet.
