Proper soup is great, but you can live on some 'bad soup' just fine. If you get close to something viable, the game should tell you, so keep experimenting.
Be sure to carry a knife or two for chopping up critters and you'll have more than enough food.
I don’t know where you’re at so I won’t spoil directly but you’ll visit two places that periodically respawn resources and can find a decent bit of salt besides searching office file cabinets.
It's okay to eat cooked alien meat, just know that your rad decreases slowly, so eating less filling meat will build up radiation a ton.
Drum sticks are the highest hunger filling for the minimal radiation increase so to speak.
Early-game, finding money in filing cabinets and desk drawers and then spending that on the vending machines is the real MVP.
Later on, after you cook some of the Immurement Subjects, you get access to Soups, which is an easy way to remove the radiation poisoning which would otherwise be associated with eating their meats.
Combine the right raw meats and you might even discover a very powerful soup recipe.
Failing that, salt and peas in a pot will earn you a cheap and easy soup that doubles as thirst recovery.
