To keep things powered for the night, you want a battery before the thing you want to power. Later you'll get better batteries that can power 2/3 appliances on their own. But again, keep in mind you should avoid batteries powering batteries, this can be a little tricky to set up your strips in places.

I'm still waiting on the devs to make it defunct by making the power system more logical and friendly on the player's side of things.
Short answer, never put more than two batteries in series, because of the diminishing returns. But you have to have 2 (makeshift) batteries to make up for the slight shortcoming of one battery not powering one device for the entire night.
I should update my guide with this since I've said this a few times.
- While receiving power, the battery will ignore how many things are connected and start charging.
- While not receiving power, the battery will tick down in 'power' every 5 seconds, removing X amount of energy units per device down the line; including other batteries. Once out of units it stops providing power.
And that's it.
