The mini-game is a bit weird, but it does make sense once you get the hang of it.
What I do I just hold down LMB to reel it in, which it will do automatically when able to.
For the direction you need to counter, you use WASD; and not your mouse.
The fish can also go diagonally, so you will need to press two buttons at once.
As the little pop up says, you need to pull in the direction opposite of where it is going. So if it is going left, you pull right (D). If it is going towards you, you pulls forward (W). If it is going Up and Right you go Down and Left (A and D).
After two or three cycles of trying to reel it in, you should get the fish.
Though, I kept the bones, given how most items in the game have a reason to be around.
