(Mild spoilers) Is Canaan mandatory to complete?

Decided to get back to the game with Dark Energy, but haven't played a lot since Crush Depth was out, so this is my first time seeing Canaan. But this is why I've noticed something different about the game - Tier 4 hacker (which is required to beat Security Sector) now requires a lodestone fragment (and it didn't before). And the only source of the given resource I've found was Canaan. So, was Canaan made to be mandatory for completion, as without it, you could not get Tier 4 hacker?

Canaan IS now mandatory progression. I'm not thrilled about it either, but I did enjoy having to get through it. It's a marathon, not a sprint like a lot of other portal worlds.

The requisite item for the T4 hacker is quite common, but it does have the downside of requiring fairly significant pushes into Canaan.

I'm not sure if its just me, but I killed like 20 rats before Canaan, and they never dropped a fragment. However, AFTER Canaan, the first rat I killed dropped a fragment.

Oh that might be true then yes would would need to do Canaan at least once.

But pro tip for spoiler reasons on your first run through setup a bench near the hut with the thing. You will thank me later as the thing is use in an end game item you will want a few of.

It is, and it's quite confusing for a returning player. If i'm not mistaken the hint for Canaan is after the first T4 door, or else i didn't find any and i wandered around the complex for quite some time before finding the portal (tree)

Either i'm blind and there is another hint or they maybe fixed it

Yeah, I had to search around for the info on the lodestone fragment, and only then found out it is in Canaan. It is really strange that they put the hint for the Tier 4 hackerpad component behind Tier 4 door.
