I've been playing this game and monitoring this forum for months, and if there was I likely would have heard about it already. Nothing like that has been mentioned in Steam Guides for fishing, other than one that literally says "pray to RNGesus".
So diving for the night sigil to make the helmet seems to be worth it if your only goal is the rare fish cheevo. I don't think there is a mechanical bonus for the rares, they are just different colors.
Same but for most it didn't bother me until only the "rare rare" and "rare rare rare" fish were left. Then the grind ramped up 100%. :( These fish are a bit much and also in the least various location. You basically just have 1 spot. :(
And since I do not feed the abomination I drown in food :( I filled an entire room with fish plates :P an I still slashed maybe 50% of it into bio scrap.
My rare fish were almost all pretty reasonable to fish. You might need more time for one but then others are quicker. Try to find a fishing spot it reduces your time by giving you less scrap.
Which rare are you currently looking for?
Chair, Hat and Bait are essential to reduce time. And just to make sure, you do not use the waders right? They give you scrap only.
No other fishing item states the rare chances. hat, box, and bait does not seem to result in that high of a chance; it does not seem to scratch 10% like the night helmet does. I.E this seems to be the easiest route if your goal is just one rare fish
