hammer and shield issue

When I have a shield equipped I've noticed I can't use the destroy furniture option from the hammer because it requires the right mouse button, but the shield uses the same button. Am I missing something or do I have to take off the shield anytime I want to break something down without whacking it to pieces? That's really annoying.

you are correct.
-- shields must be unequipped in order to dismantle.

not that dismantling is ever really needed, basic attacks work just fine.

You can also use the Holster Item button to toggle the shield.
Though I'm not sure if it's worth using the hammer, unless you have the perk at level 10 construction. You don't get any XP from hammer decons, it's better to try to pick it up, and then scrap it - or just break it with a weapon.
