If I recall correctly, you get info about it at around the point you 'beat' the area. After that, you should also be able to use a jet pack there and make travel a whole lot easier.

Maybe you missed the trigger that gives you the lore about it. If I recall correctly, it should be around near the exit portal.
I think that's what's happening, that trigger never fired.
Mycofields is one of the location near Cascade Laboratories on journal map right ?

then you likely are missing that entirely.
Though an easy way to tell is checking the Locations log on the GATE Pal.

There are several other locations that are accessible in the Lab Sector, with 2 or 3 being really easy to miss.
If I had to guess, the most likely thing that's happened is that you are missing a different Portal World and mistaking it for the already logged Mycofields.
