Oddly enough, the filing cabinets (not the Huge one) tend to have a good amount of storage for the floor space it takes. 2 Large Filing Cabinets stacked on another is basically a 6x6 on a small spot on the floor.
Though I'd still use the Medium Crates since you can still stack those and visibly name then. Plus they are more durable.
But before I realized that you can put names on those boxes (or before it was possible) I did use a sign to label what was what. I could label 9 storages with the three lines it provided.
If you put storage above your work area you only need to look up to grab em.
I'm not sure how radiation works on a vertical level.
