Cascade Labs, Particle Lab Tree/Roots?

Does anyone have any idea about what to do with the tree growth/roots from the ceiling, in the Particle Lab section? I'm just going through, and noticed there's a button pad in front of that tree, in the little labs/monitoring area (One that has a console and a hologram), but I can't press it. There's nothing that I can see to put on the roots/tree either. What did I miss?
