But as a rule if you are getting the safe home buff respawns are stopped outside of portal storms.
With portal storms they are going to spawn around the work bench area so a good plan is to put your storage on the outer edge of the home buff which later will let the remote storage upgrade work while putting the storage away form portals.
For the most part put all your valuable stuff away form the bench itself. I tend to put my workbench on one side of my base and put everything else a good step away form it.
If you don't have a battery hooked up to it, enemies may naturally spawn near it at night
Until then, you just gotta kill the pests as quickly as possible and have a hammer on hand for repairing damage
The Portal Storms aren't much of a big deal if you have a Vacuum and just pick up and YEET Pests into a wall (or Portal, since that counts as a solid object). The occasional Peccary at the end might be an issue, but that only shows up until later. When you do get the parts for the Portal Suppressor, you better get it made since a worse kind of Pest can show up, and I'm not too fond of that being dropped into my base.
As for why bother with barricades, that is a valid question; and I wish the devs would hand this better. Early on, the Portal Storms do give a strong first impression that a defensive line is moot, when it really isn't later on (or is?). There will be Raids that should show up well outside your base and start to approach your base to attack it. If you plan things right, as one should in a survival game with building, it is typically a no-issue.
Though before someone else comes in and complains, yes, there are cases where Raid enemies can spawn inside your base. That has to do with the fixed spawn locations and it being forced to pick a rather bad spot. If it happens, I'd recommend sending a bug report, with pics, to let the devs know about the issue.
Lastly, game balance on base defense has been under tuned (with relatively weak enemy against strong traps), mostly to keep from putting players off. There are some locations where you can still forgo making a barricade line, because the defense is just that good.
All in all it isn't perfect, but it has been getting better. I feel for you on the Portal Storms, but in the grand scheme of things, the Portal Storms aren't even that hard.
Yea I get 3 frickin portal spawns in my room and it's mega cramped. I oughta move
Though, if you don't mind moving things around, I think the carpet trick could help block spawns. It might be patched, but if it isn't, throwing down carpet (for now) could block what little spots are left for the Portals to spawn in.
