If you break down most anything wooden (desks, crates, pallets, etc) you'll get some wood planks in return. It is ideal to actually try to package stuff up (that can be packaged) rather than smashing them to get the crafting XP out of them when you inevitably fail; since you get the same resources anyway. Early on the Data Farm in Level 2 has a lot of desks you can raid, among a bunch of other useful resources.
(If you actually package it up, you can use it as a free barricade, or can break it with the RMB of the hammer, or break it down at the Repair & Salvage Bench)
Once you get into your first significant portal world, you should be more than fine on renewable wood resources (if not other resources as well).
Not naming names to avoid spoilers, there is one portal world that's just past the half way point of what's available that should give you more wood planks than you know what to do with. That places is typically the most cited place on getting wood planks, among other things as well.
This is probably the way to go, though, especially once you have the construction perk that gives you a 50% chance for double materials from dismantling furniture.
If you don't have the perk yet, simply deconstructing all you can see inside the furniture store is a really quick way to get there.
Approaching combat more slowly and carefully could help with the need of healing so much.
