If I had to guess the tongue animation was removed because it didn't work or look good...? It didn't exactly grapple onto you; it more did an out of sight 'Spiderman web sling' onto an unseen object and was physics launched forward as if thrown.
I'm not sure if the tongue animation will ever come back, nor if the attack mechanics will be revised to match that concept; being a pull rather than a throw.
Can confirm, it was the attack animation for pests in playtests as well before the demo
I like them spinning more than that one
My guess was that it was changed to help differentiate it from Half-Life's headcrabs, alongside the identity with the pest wheel generator.
i think enemies that use more "progressive animations" and other graphical tricks would be neat
