How do assaults work with multiple bases?
I'm playing Solo, and for my first world, I've got a main base in the (in)famous Security Office overlooking Manufacturing. It's just a really good spot. That said: The travel time is a bit much to get Water and to the further areas. It's isolated, spacious, and really cool, but I'm curious on if it's possible to build outposts around the facility with a few traps, a bench, and some amenities. I have the Anti-Portal Assault upgrade on my main bench, of course, and it's almost too safe IMO, but I don't know how night assaults work across multiple bases. I noticed they only really trigger if I am inside or near the "safe zone." Would the base I am in be attacked, or would any base considered a "safe zone" be attacked? How does the game decide this minutia? If I know how night assaults work, I'd be better able to gauge where and how to build small outposts for respawn points and crafting.

Edit: Thanks for the information, everyone. It seems that assaults really do only affect one base at a time, and the base in question is the one you get to first after they trigger. I heard rumors that bases would just kind of get ransacked while you are gone, but since this thread, I've built some small cramped outposts. The restroom in the Pool, and the Guard Shack in the foyer outside of the cafeteria. You'd be surprised what you can fit in both of those tiny rooms. On regular nights and non-portal assaults, they are fantastically easy to defend without being cheesy, but Portal Storms can and will spawn inside these cramped rooms if I'm inside them when it happen. What they won't do is spawn while I'm in a different base, which was my one and only worry about them.

If it is a Portal Storm, it will start to dump portals on you until there are three rips in space that are more or less spread out. These rips will corelate with where you walked, so if you are near a Crafting Bench, they will start to show up, and show up in places where it has room to spawn in. I read that if you somehow delayed approaching any base from being 4pm to 11pm or midnight (idk exactly when the attack starts) it will delay the attack until you get close to a base and then spawn one portal.

If it is a raid, you will not know what kind of raid it is untill it is close to happening. Again, it will pick a base that you are at and will attack at the usual time at night. If you are late to getting to any base, it will delay the attack until you get close to a base.

In short, the game is really nice in terms of attacks, only attacking at a given base(mainly the Crafting Bench) that you are currently at, and not attacking an empty base. Spawn points aren't taken into account, and it will always see other active Crafting Benches as their own separate base. If it does attack an empty base, odds are you walked away from an attack in progress.

Also be careful with placing Crafting Benches too close to each other, since placing one too close to an active one could just render it into a simple crafting spot, and not have its other effects.

From what I can tell, they either assault whatever base you are currently at or wherever your closest spawn point is. In my solo world I have 3 bases with a bed each and whatever base I'm at I make sure my spawn point is set to the base I'm currently at because I'm still not 100% sure how it works but I've never had them assault a base I wasn't at. Hope that helps.

Hey, that's a good enough answer for me to at least try! Appreciate the firsthand.

Far as I can tell, it's not tied the bed you set as your respawn point but the nearest bench you're at instead.

My main base and bed/ respawn point is at the cafeteria's security hub but whenever there's an order assault or zombie raid it happens at whatever side bases I was at, and all of them have the military cot instead of the crafted bed.

IMO - sample size of 1 - the starting Cafeteria can get attacked too soon and without enough warning that defenses are necessary; particularly the portal storm event. It's literally devastating and traumatizing (for me anyway) when it just DUMPS enemies into what seemed like a safe space and all the storage containers ended up in wrecked inventory drop bags.

I understand not wanting a player to just camp in the cafeteria forever. However the portal storm event is too much until the player reaches Adjustments and can craft the items to resist them.

If you are not in an area its not even loaded and nothing can be attacked lol

However, even if you avoid an event the enemies will just spawn in when you return to a base. I find that vanilla spawn rates are quite obnoxious but the shock traps are very cheap and kill pretty much every annoying enemy without causing any damage to you or your stuff.

Throw a hand full of them down and chill. The only downside is a long recharge time but they dont need any power source, don't injure you and cause good damage+disable enemies. :waytohell:
