It'd still be great to just have a gravity fed drip barrel that takes care of everything for a week.
Also, you should put your farm plots near your Crafting Bench, since the Dioxohealer (apparently) works better with farmable plants nearby (as said in the in-game description). This also helps with reducing the risk of dead plants, since you'll typically be right there to see if the plot is low on water.
I'd recommend not using the round plots (unless you turn them side) since the indicator water tank on the post is easy to miss.
When getting a plant started, you will need about 800 ml of water, so you will have to fill up the plot's tank a couple times (if not more), since a small plot has a 400ml tank and a 2x2 plot has a 1650ml tank (a bit more than 400 ml per plant).
After the first harvest, keeping them alive should be way easier. As said only harvest plants when needed since the plants just pause when at the harvest state.
Also, use the 2x2 plot if possible, the extra 50ml is actually extremely handy, since it takes care of what seems to be a rounding error that the small plots run into after harvesting.
A plant that is harvested used 400 ml of water, and theoretically the small plot should handle that, and the 2x2 plot can handle 4 plants just fine on a full tank. However, just before the single plot can allow a plant to finish progressing to the harvest state, it is a few ml of water short, and goes into a dying state if left alone. Unlike the 2x2 plot, you will have to wait awhile and then top off the plot with more water before you can safely go off on an adventure.
How long are you away from base? I had no problem watering my plants in single player. The bigger plots you get later give you more time. Also if you do not need the crops, don't harvest. Fully grown crops don't consume water.
Were I myself in the PC's position, I'd use what's called a "metered orifice", in this case literally a small pinhole prick on a flat plug plate in place of a washer or end cap. Just a constant slow drip.
Like I said, needs to be: Fill once a week (when you start) and FORGET.
You realize they have a red light when they go low? So all you need to do i glance at the light when you are home. Or even better, make it a routine to fill water before you leave. I have a bucket on an itemstand just for that.
If everything is automated we don't need to play games. It plays itself.
That's on you if you aren't going to do basic tasks that's done in most other survival games.
Spots like that, while easy to defend, are better as outposts rather than bases.
And as others have mentioned, once the crop is fully grown, it doesn't decay (so collect when you need it). So when 1 plant is done, add a new plant (if you want) and repeat the process.
(hmm... though that would be kinda cool if some plants only grow based on certain temperatures. Warm it up with a heater, or chill it by waiting for night, or putting it in the freezer near the cafeteria / starting area).
