You need to aim the lamp more or less directly at their head, dead center, maintain the light do NOT turn it off. The essence should drop.

It took me 2-3 times to figure it out, while the turret would do it's job just fine as long as powered and not obstructed visually.

ofc i have it aimed down what do you think i was doing? rubbing one out to leyak? he would instantly disappear in close range when i aim with it on him as if im only holding eye contact, i havent tried the turret yet because it takes a long time for him to respawn near me

It's possible you're staring at it for too long before flashing it with the light, so that the despawn prioritizes over the light trigger. I turn the light on before I look directly at him, so if you aren't doing that, I'd start there.

You're not? Your loss.

i did it by luring him to my x-ray tower and i was standing on top of it and staring at the ceiling, it worked

One of the other pitfalls MIGHT BE if a transparent object bounding box is in the way. Like a stair rail. I've been avoiding that too; not sure if the game reliably traces through it, but now that I think about all the times before I had the gun it very well might be that sort of problem.

if you want him to spawn constantly go to labs and change 1 essence against a eye seed (you can also find one in the lab) the fruit is just a big fat neon plak for him and he is going to spawn way more with the buff of the fruit

Yeah, the dang thing seem to have a detection conflict of sorts; as if it failed to an x-ray check script or something and just assumed you're staring at it instead.

Sentry/ X-ray turrets work fine but portable ones is whole kinds of jank atm.

yup X-ray towers are the best option i keep getting leyak essence whenever i come back from looting to the base, i find 1 or 2 around the entrance or even while im inside, i have 12 essence so far and counting at end game

I'd like to add to the detection issues bug. At least once when I was in the laser lab and stepped outside to zap it, the Leyak didn't detect my flashlight properly, and apparently I edged too close while holding it, so it went into attack mode, and no matter how I pointed the X-ray flashlight at the monster, it kept attacking and not dying.
I'm having this exact issue. Really regret building the lamp when the turrets get the drop every time. I'm stuck waiting outside the xray door now. Not sure why they decided you needed 4 of these things on top of a random spawn or why it costs 1 just to make the thing. Already had to run all the way here and repeat furniture store twice just to now stand around.
It is regrettable that when lowering the stare down time, it also made using the X-ray Lamp less useful. It's still useful, since it stops the Leyak mid attack, but now it is so easy to accidentally spook the Leyak before getting anything.

There are a few ways to make it go faster.

If you are playing solo, or your co-op buddys don't mind, you can reload the save (but don't exit the game) and it should show back up within minutes.

Another is using the Greyeb to reduce spawn times.

there is a door you can open you only need to go to the store once

Reducing the stare down time was a mistake in my opinion. Now that we have the confinement they should increase it again. I had the same problem of trying to get an essence and basically having to approach it backwards to not immediately shooing it away.

The stare down timer should be dynamic to the number of players in the game maybe? +2 extra second for each extra player.

XR Lamp should tag the Leyak immediately upon exposure, so it will always drop a essence upon despawning.
