I didn't bother joining randos, but if I recall correctly many of the games that were listed were privated/passworded.
I think the best way to find random people is to use the listed Discord server that's in the pinned thread.
Also I'm at a loss on how to find good places, other than filtering out/sorting out private servers for open ones and hoping for the best.
And it isn't like the good old days of HL1 DeathMatch/TFC/CS/etc where you can just browse through a server list and just hop on. Those game types had little to mess up, so if there was a troll, you could maybe vote kick or leave the place for something else.
The best comparison would be open Minecraft servers, where there is more persistence of changes, but those typically turned 'anarchic' without extensive modifications. Even then, this game can only have like 6 or so people (more if you dare), and it just takes one troll to ruin the whole thing. And unlike MC, you can't hide from a troll by going off on in some random direction.
So it kinda goes back to selectively vetting people that get onto a server, either via social media, Discord (arguably is social media too?), or hope that an open dedicated server has good admins/moderators.
