I haven't played in a while, but I noticed that the pvp mode is missing. Am I just overlooking something or was that removed?

PvP was removed.I'm not entirely sure the reason, but to my knowledge it wasn't that populated compared to the PvE. I'm assuming it was also a pain to properly balance the game around both PvE and PvP. They did however say that they feel PvP still had a place in the OMD series, just not that mode.

Oh neat. I didn't like the idea of OMD becoming a MOBA anyway.

Yeah, the game is, in my opinion, much better now. It has more content. They removed the horrible crafting system. It's more balanced. It just overall feels better.
