Sort of GDI (ok, we have that one) + a hit and run style (aka Nod) faction
Ancient:
Romans vs. Greek
SciFy:
Fleet of Stars vs. GROB (read the latter right to left)
Empire vs. Rebellion (could be any empire and any rebellion against it :D)
Fantasy:
Orcs vs Humans
I like the idea of an ancient army, is this sparta?
Pirates?
Vikings?
Rise of the kitchen tools, army of fridges and toasters?
When I think about the game having 6 or more totally different armies which totally don't fit together I have to grin. I'd love to see that!
I could also go for a Hierarchy-style faction with walkers as replacements for buildings or a Goo-style faction with no base building at all.
I think you could also do a MOBA style faction, where you have the option of playing 1 of 5 different heroes. Your base would just be a series of towers, creep producers and a shop. You have no control of creeps, you just protect them. If Petroglyph could actually pull something like this off, where you are playing against a normal RTS faction, then this game will be the ultimate WTF crazy, time sink, light hearted RTS.
This!
It'd be super cool to have an ancient civilization/tribal-like faction. Plus we could then engage in "archer vs. tank" battles, which are infamous in Civilization!
I'm picturing a Hero Line Tower Wars gamemode like in the Warcraft 3 custom games.
But either way, I don't think the devs have any intention of making a hero-type unit, especially one with abilities and an inventory, anytime soon.

Units

I must confess that I have a soft spot for gigantic destructive units (just imagine them walking through the cities and leveling everything in their paths), and I realize it must be very well balanced to work in a game. They can't be too strong so that it's impossible to take them down using a large amount of normal units, but not too weak or expensive so it's not worth building them.
As someone already mentioned, I really like those huge customizable Hierarchy walker units from Universe at War, that would be cool too.
Grey Goo - Epic units

Universe at War - Hierarchy faction

Supreme Commander - Experimental units

So am I crazy here, or would epic units be feasible in this game?
Voxel terrorists, technicals, and tunnel networks FTW!
CNC already did it.
It could be marketed as the Starcraft for people who hate Starcraft faction. lol Sales will be millions!

Please tell me that someone on staff worked on this back in the day.
We have enough of that already in other RTS.
Adding more distinct races will mess with the entry barrier of the game, which is one of its greatest strengths atm.
