The 360 console was prone to overheating (I had a launch model), so even back then, I saved every 5-10K kills. If you go up using the maintance door by the white car in the tunnels, you are RIGHT next to a save point. Take like 2 minutes to save, then you can pick right back up killing.
I actually managed to do it in only about 2.5 hours the other day - drove the Red Car into the tunnels, made a left to go to the Truck beneath the North part of the mall, took the Truck the long way South, looped around the food court circle, then drove to the White Car - and ignored it the first time by turning left and making a second loop through that rectangle of tunnels, then stopped at the White Car when I looped back around. Drove the White Car the reverse path, and when I got near the entrance, made sure to cut over to the center of the tunnels (where the tunnel key room is found), then turnaround and head back to the exit.
1) Something important to note is that a LOT more zombies spawn in a section of tunnel if you've already driven through that part of the tunnel, so looping back on your path is very helpful.
2) Do NOT worry about driving a vehicle until it breaks down. That's inefficient - once you're at the next vehicle and it's time to change over, just do it. Having the vehicle break down in the tunnels will add 5-10 minutes to your run EACH TIME it happens as you are forced to make your way to the next vehicle on foot.
Doing it this way, I was able to get the Achievement 45 minutes to an hour faster than I did on 360. (It helps that the load times are near instaneous on the PC version.)
