Once you beat the cultist leader you get a book that drastically improves the survivor AI.
No more hand holding, no more carrying, they all follow and can fight adequately well.
But at that time it's not really worth using, because theres only couple of survivors.
But yeah, there was a reason why AI sucks and that was, like you said, intentional. To make thje game harder

I do fine the other survivors pretty useless, but what's nice is once Frank is maxed level you can run the game solo when you have to. Only a few times when you have to keep an eye on a story character.

The survivor ai got better with each game.

In dead rising 1 it’s like trying to keep 8 dumb ducks out of gator infested water.

But there are means to manage it.

The mixed drinks for example frank could take zombait which would aggro the zombies on himself as he guides survivors to move across the room.

Or option B carry some severed hands and lure the zombies away from escort paths.

They just follow you directly and try not to fight which is exactly what you want because they are bad at fighting, if they are getting caught its because you are playing badly. if you try to just run through zombies they will all get grabbed cause you are expecting them to be as good at dodging as frank. In this game you tell them to wait, cut a path through then tell them to follow.

Its a massive shame in DR2 that you never have to fight zombies you just walk through because the zombies dont target the survs and the survs can just push them over. they really dumbed it down for people that dont know how to play

This, its why I keep coming back to DR1 over the sequels. There is no challenge for the survivors at all. You have to intentionally get them killed in DR2/3. Whereas 1 you literally have to try and game plan how to get from point A to point B. Manage their health, give some weapons so they cover each other.

I mean if you give 2-3 a shotgun they can usually hold an area fairly well. The only exception is the dumb zombie code that spawns zombies off screen, so if you aren't looking at them they can get instantly swarmed by 20 guys. But again that means you are playing badly by leaving them by themselves.

All that said its a sandbox game at its core, one of the first. You can do anything you want. You don't want to play the story? You don't have to. You don't want to save survivors? You don't have to. Literally dozens of other tasks things to do in the mall. Literally advertised as the game you can take anything and kill a zombie with it.

In OTR survivors are dumb as ♥♥♥♥ so there is a little bit of challenge. And, they're getting grabbed more easily which means they are losing health super fast.

No I do not agree.
The survivors are fun to herd around, they do get stuck and die if you suck. If you are good at the game you can get them to do what you want, it can be hard at times but it's a good challenge.

You gotta treat rescuing the survivors like it is a strategy game for those parts. Every time you enter a new area get them to wait in the corner - go and find food or drinks to make sure their health is up while also finding a saving point. Go back to them and get them to follow you again. If they get stuck then try as best as you can to clear zombies around them while giving them stuff in your inventory with extra food and drinks you have. Get to next area in mall and do same thing. Make sure you use the multiple saves so if you mess up (accidentally kill one of your survivors with your melee weapon) can go back to another save to restore.

OTR literally uses the same AI as DR2. It is a carbon copy story beat wise except for 1-2 beginning cases and the end. None of the side stories got changed at all, outside of Frank reacting rather than Chuck. If you are having issues w/ DR2 AI than you have issues my friend. You can literally run from one end of the strip and not even look back and the survivors are fine. If they happen to get caught the icon literally flashes to say who, and you turn back and get them.

Actually the survivors are way worse in OTR because they're dumb. Their AI was nerfed on purpose.

From Wiki (about OTR's survivors):
Survivor A.I. is less competent and physically weaker.
Survivors will keep losing health while being grabbed by a zombie.

So yeah, they are weak and pathetic in OTR, unlike in DR2 where they were actually good.

No brain Ai just looking at frank "What to do?".

After over 6 runs rescuing nearly all Survivor have taught me things:
- Have atleast 2 Shotguns at all times so you can arm survivors, or atleast an SMG
- Only spam the Holler button if a Survivor is stuck on geometry (Or the stupid woman survivors constantly stopping during stairs), otherwise they'll get staggered recalculating pathways
- Keep an eye on your Survivors at all times; they can start trying to clear out all Zombies, Holler at them so they stop wasting time
- Use the Hammer Throw (Attack+Jump while at a Zombie's side) to clear entire paths relatively easily, extra useful if you managed to put a goal marker right before

- Put a Shotgun round to their heads when all of the above fail

I wonder if the inability to walk down a slope while holding hands was intentional, too? Just got finished with my first 53-survivor no-knockouts run. I, contrary to the previous poster, found spamming "follow me" constantly to be the best option with every single survivor. It kept them from ever stopping and made zombies absolutely trivial throughout the game as long as I could steer them through a gap.

I think holding hand mechanic wasn't made for slopes or slight height difference. Maybe that's what is bugging it?

I was usually using markers instead of Follow Me command and it helped me a lot.
the only survivor that can actually defend themselves is Kindell.
