You dont even have the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ respect to contact him.
This is going to be looking at cutscene and dialoge character, not really player controlled character as you can make all of them pyshcopaths of thier own.
1: our main protaginist of Dead Rising is Frank West, a 38 (according to the dead rising wiki which got that source from a japanese interview during dead risings production) year old freelance photographer. Hes got a fresh tip from some source that something going down in Willimete Colorado. He hires Ed Deluca to charter him out there and finds out the towns story is bigger than expected.
As the story unfolds its clear frank has 1 interest in mind, the scoop and what happened. He shows it in his introductions to Jessica and Brad, he always is taking pictures (even when its an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing to do, like oh dr. Barnaby's dead? PULL OUT THE CAMERA)
With that said he's not a complete sociopath, he does have a strong sense of morality and humanity. He feels sick watching humans die in gruesome ways (cletus he looks down and closes his eyes trying to ignore the thw sound, adam he covers his face with his hands and back away, even Cliff he closes his eyes and feels sorry for what transpired).
Overall Frank West is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who will go to lengths to get the story, but he still has his humanity and morals.
From what can be gathered on backstory Chuck's a handy man who lost his wife and his duaghter infected to a Las Vegas outbreak (play case Zero).
Fast forward a couple years later and to make money for the highly sought after and expensive Zombrex, chuck is fighting money matchs. However, something goes wrong and once more a zombie outbreak has begun and its up to chuck to figure it out.
First off, chuck has a much more human motivation for his goal, he wants to keep katey safe and thus collects zombrex over the course of the game. It makes him much more human in terms of his motivations (lets be real, the only thing stopping frank from becoming kent was his morals).
However, unlike frank...he has a MUCH darker out look on humans. Not even flitching as a pyscho path is torn apart, instead he makes one-liners. This takes what was making him a believable human into a sociopath. If someone was to start making puns after they killed them, you wouldnt want to follow them to some safehouse.
Overall, chuck has his realistic and emotional motivations, but unlike frank the only thing holding his humanity and morals together is katey. He loses her its over and hes off the deep end (as seen in Off The Record)
4: Frank is back and it feels much more different, supposedly he's around 50 and it doesnt really show. He's got a cheery, live and let un-live about zombies. He takes what seems to be joy in killing humans (making a wise crack about talk about it like irrational adults) and just seems a lot more optimistic about life...i dont buy it.
spoilers for 1 while i did say yes frank had his morals and he would go to a great lengths for his story...he does give up at one point. When that chopper crashes and strands him, he seems to just give up life. Resigning himself to being eaten, not caring about what happens.
AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES him the most human character i think capcoms ever done, he GIVES UP. After all this work and effort to save the mall from carlito and uncover the story, he watchs in horror as his last chance slips his grasp.
Lets be frank (pun not intended) put yourself in franks shoes (or camera) and think what he's just gone through. He watched people be torn apart, any of his allies die in front of him or be turned into zombies (notice if you take a snapshot of jessica as a zombie, he makes a completely original sound, a one of horror and sadness). He wanted the story of what happened here to get out and for the people to be held accountable.
Then he watchs as his chance to show the world burns up in his very eyes (or in this cass through his lens) and falls apart. Thats what i like the most about frank, like actual humans he has a breaking point.
Even when its all done, he still feels AWEFUL about what he's done (screaming as brock is TORN apart).
Now capcoms trying to tell me hes a badass, who has the biggest balls anyones seen? He makes snappy one liners and has a cheery mood...way to do fanfiction writing and ruin one of your most human characters capcom.
That said, its only what we've been shown. He could be masking his crippling depression and constant need for zombrex with a false mask of cheery attiude. Which, if thats the case. Hats off to capcom.
Though i dont get that feeling and sucks seeing one of my favorite characters in gaming go from a believable if ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ human, to a walking punchline with a snarky remark at everything around him. If you wanted to do that, just ditch frank. Have someone else, cause that doesnt fit his CHARACTER.
Frank and Chuck both got very strong introductions that immediately told us their personal goals. The developers stumbled badly with Nick - what's supposed to be his character introduction is instead just a gameplay tutorial. At the end of that tutorial, we learn his motivation for the game is ... escaping the quarantined city. Which is the same motivation for every non-psycho he will meet in the game.
Dead Rising 3 could have put us in control of neary ANY other character in the city, without effecting the game. (There is one story twist, but it has nothing to do with NICK as a character or person, and could have held true for dozens of other people.)
We only know Nick is a mechanic because of the outfit he is wearing. The next piece of personal info we get on him is that he "has no family", "no one that will miss him". That is kind of awful on the writers' part. There are KEY techniques used in every good story to make a character likeable, to make the audience identify and support them - one of the most successful techniques (and EASIEST) is showing the character being liked and supported by other characters. Dead Rising 3 squanders this easy and early opportunity to make us care about Nick.
Another misstep is starting the game in media-res. The outbreak has already happened, three days have passed, the city is now your playground.
Nick is not a bad character, because he isn't really a CHARACTER. I don't dislike Nick. But I don't identify with him. I don't think Capcom knew what to DO with Nick. And that's a shame. Because I feel like I could stomach more of the gameplay changes in Dead Rising 3 if the story or characters held up.
When writing a protagonist, you have to answer a few questions: "WHY is this person the most vital to the story? WHY is the story happening to this person NOW? WHY is this person the only one who can answer/solve the driving question of the story?" Capcom failed on all counts with Nick - they should have just gone the whole way and let players make a custom character, because they didn't have a reason for giving us the character they did.
Also, as an aside about Dead Rising 4 - can the military be the good guys for once? Must it always turn out to be corrupt? Frank mentions in one of the trailers that he bets those military guys are behind the outbreak - I hope that's a misdirection.
Not that I have anything against the military being bad guys, but EVERY GAME?! Come on Capcom. Give us something original.
What i count as opening is the first 20 or 30 minutes in. So with that said lets go.
1: opens with a GIANT text showing the date and time, cuts as we fly over mountains (cant be the only one who thought arkley mountains) and see a helicopter. In it we see a man fly and another taking pictures. They mention something about a story, and then they see the towns been cut off by the national guard.
Then the game cuts to actual pseudo gameplay as the chopper flys through the town and your given basic controls of looking around (an excellant way to allow the player to get acustomed to looking around while being completely safe YET not feel safe).
You take pictures of people torn apart and Ed remarks on them (not making any puns, he seems quite worried for the people down there, even makes an audiable gasp as the zombies have a school bu surrounded)
The game furthers the mystery and errieness of it all by continuing the pan by, showing exploding gas stations, the harshness of gravity and more. All while your in control of the section, but in a limited way. (Can even skip it, that way pros can just get to the game now)
Then the character (who is still unknown at this time) tells Ed to take him to center of town. We get a look at a flyby of the chopper over the streets (very obvious day of the dead cameo) and encounter the mall. Frank gives his name (good writing there) and tells ed to come back for him.
Next he asks ed to get him on the rooftop of that mall, while ed finds him crazy he gets ready to go, when suddenly the army appears and 3 helos chase after them. He decides (rather foolishly) to jump off and lands as ed takes off and flys away.
Then all the sudden the game cuts to a strange man who asks really weird questions (i think hes he informant of frank and wanted as many reporters out here to let the world know) like you came alone, came by helicopter and more. This already layers on the confusion the players supposed to feel (the helicopter question feels like a localization or early line that was kept in by accident).
Then finally your given control and make your way into the mall proper, stopping to view a camera as a black and white image shows a women being torn apart as frank looks horrorfied.
Finally the last part of the opening, the SUPER tense enterance plaza scene. Frank learns about whats going on (zombies) and sees that already some thing are falling apart (HAVE YOU SEEN MY PRECIOUS LITTLE BABY). He gathers some material for a barricade and the slaughter begins as frank now has to fight his way to the stairs across a VERY large anount of zombies.
Overall, an excellant opener for the game, giving a firm idea of the games themes, mechanics and more. While also inticing the player to continue.
I also failed to mention the part where if you do die in the entrance plaza, its not game over. Its assumed otis carried you safely. So it even fufillss the act of having you be completely safe, yet not feel safe in its entire opening tutorial. Hats off
It opens with a man working on a bike as company credits scroll by. We watch as he continues working and is handed a wrench by a little girl. We learn near immeaditly his name and that the little girl is his daughter.
Then suddenly we're in a enclosed room with 3 other racers, right off the bat one of them makes a remark about his dead wife and his failure in new vegas. We also get a opening to the games theme which is absurd humor, showing a giant gameshow and how patriotic killing zombies is.
We're introduced to the game shows host as he says some goofy catchphrase and spouts one liners.
Then we're tossed into gameplay that is never used again, into a mode that doesn't feel dangerous or has any stakes. The timer counts down as a rock soundtrack plays and we slaughter zombies. Already removing any tension or horror. It also remarks on how well you do, giving different cutscenes based your performance.
However no matter what, there are 2 dancers that just are not impressed with your zombie killing moves and make constant ♥♥♥♥ inuendos.
We're then shown a small snippet of a man who had a family in Willamette and introduced to a zombie pro activist group.
Finally chuck enters an elevator after a ♥♥♥♥ joke and is beset upon by zombies.
Overall, its a...strange opening, going so goofy its near parody levels, then changing tones to a more serious "i lost my family" tone...its very inconsistent and just cant seem to decide what it wants to be. A funny zombie slaughtering game, or a more serious zombie game.
Also, unlike the palza opening, you die. Its game over, no second chances. Hats still on
3: begins with a time lapse showing the gradual descent of the entire city into chaos as a vague techno soundtrack plays in the background. As it progrsses through the timelapse we get a idea of how far the outbreak escalates and how the city falls apart.
After 72 hours we are then shown a panning shot as the camera zooms out and we're shown a failed quarantine and a bee fly out of a zombies mouth. It flys over and a hand suddenly appears almost being stun/killing the bee and a man climbs over the edge of a barrior.
He talks about finding a way out of the city and searchs a car, we are shown his writen on him (just have a hell name sticker at that point) and booted into "gameplay".
Already hes hurt and at 1 hp. We're told to find some food and the game holds our hand for us as we find food and make our way through the tunnel. We then turn on some lights and are greeted by a lot of zombies, oh no, behind fences...oh.
He walks through and we're given controls and being told how to do things like stomp and heavy attack.
He continues making his way through and gets to a collapsed section of the tunnel and collapses in loss. He gets back up and turns around going back the way he came. As he does suddenly the chain fences start faltering and our nick makes a run for it. He runs out the tunnel, is surrounded by zombies. And jumps off a HIGHWAY RAISED INTERSECTION hits a object and falls to the ground unconscious.
Upon waking up nick does a doggy spin and sees hes not being eaten alive. He looks around and suddenly sees a plane coming right for him. He runs and the game cuts to an opening cinamatic with a strange music choice as credits fly by
Overall, the most bland and corporate feeling opening. Its so scripted and safe, that you never feel any danger. You feel like your hand is held rather than guided. Your not even introduced to all the mechainics and theres no actual danger present, its all locked away behind a chain fence. Even though nick expresses fear, i dont see the fear.
