If I'm trying to make sure the survivor lives, I baby them. I NEVER run too far ahead and just hope they'll figure it out. Either I stay SOMEWHAT ahead (not so close that they run up and get hit) and slowly clear them a path, OR I mark a spot on the ground, move ahead, mark another spot, run back and escort them between points.
It's a pain, and maybe there's a better method, but it keeps them alive for me.
Now if your an overachiever these first 2 are most essential.
1 know the timing
Waiting on Otis and his calls are not an accurate way to complete all the scoops.
1 Otis will not start a scoop if you are in the same area of a mall as a scoop happens
2 he won’t start a scoop if the number of scoops you have active exceed 8 survivors on the map
If either of these scenarios happen it will delay Otis informing you of scoops causing you to get them late and have less time to complete them.
3 Otis does not inform you every single survivor so relying on Otis can easily make you miss a few.
All survivors you aren’t informed of by Otis are listed here
Bill day 1 entrance plaza
Cletus psycho day 1 north plaza
Pamela and heather day 2 paradise plaza
The gun shop trio Night 2 north plaza gun shop
Tip 2 know your routing
Knowing you the absolute shortest routes to take will always be beneficial.
Take the security room as your starting point
Wonderland and entrance plaza is connected to this room.
Al Fresca and north plaza are connected to those rooms
The absolute furthest point from the security room is the food court and it will take you about the same amount of time to get here no matter which way you go.
Tip 3 know what survivors excel at.
There are few survivors that actually can put up a decent fight if armed right.
Some survivors excell with firearms
Some with blunt weaponry
Even few can be effective with blades.
The girl with the wounded guy in the shoe store attacks crazy fast with a bat.
Tip 4 carry queens at night
In my opinion the hardest group of survivors to escort are the 5 you save from the true eye cult after the Sean fight.
1 you need to escort 5 and 2 it’s at night when the zombies are more aggressive.
a single queen can save you from a bad situation.
The north plaza has fairly high Queen spawn rates anytime you pass through there keep an eye for zombies that look like they have a headache.
Last tip don’t forget to take advantage of guide arrows.
You can tell your survivors to stand at a certain point while your clear a path.
A good way to get zombies away is to throw severed hands in an isolated spot and zombies will slowly move towards it making it safe for survivors to traverse elsewhere.
This gives you time to babysit the herd while they move forward.
Once you get close to the loading area, move to the next area.
Take some booze (or any food, really, but I always grab the booze from the food court) and dole it out to survivors when you're in a safe spot if needed.
Also, it's usually a good idea to give your survivors a weapon of some time.
tldr; you can tell your NPC's to go ahead by aiming at a location (default q) and pressing call survivors (I think default is ctrl, but I bound it to r to make it smoother to do with one hand)
I go slower and clear a wider berth at night due to the faster and more densely populated zombie hordes. I am also careful to not slice behind myself where my blindspot is due to how many survivors I have wasted because they ran up behind me just as I swung at a zombie about to non-consensually spoon me.
It is not perfect but I am racking up the survivor count. It also helps that I leveled up to around 30 getting the genocide achievement which goes a long way to reducing the frustration of some of the more eccentric game design decisions.
