As for technique, the best way I've ever found is to move them in a group using waypoints. Clear an area, send them there. Clear the next area ahead, move the waypoint to the area you just cleared, rinse and repeat until you reach the Security Room.
It gets tedious and make take a long time in some situations, but it's the best and safest way to move large groups. Usually small groups (like 1-3 survivors) you can play a little more dangerously with. Some survivors are even able to take care of themselves so you don't have to baby them so much.
Always carry food, even small food like snacks or apples are great for healing them up if they get in trouble. Always carry at least one Queen bee with you. If they get in a bad jam (like saving Heather and Pam for example), using a Queen is a literal lifesaver.
The "clear and move" technique works best with the Small Chainsaws from Adam and the books to make them last 27 times longer. That combo makes short work of clearing out the areas and makes moving them soooo much easier and faster. Just be careful and don't hit the survivors with the saws.

One other point is that while carrying or holding hands, you move faster and push through zombies more easily as long as they aren't lunging at you.
usually having a group of survivors with pistols makes an easy escort in medium zombie populated areas
(yes i know i dont have hours, i played 1000+ hours on this game on xbox 360)
Tip one never pick up the bravery book. This makes your people stupid.
Tip two wonderland plazas shortcut is something you should definitely take advantage of.
Tip 3 have a dead piece of flesh on hand when you have to go through a large group. If you throw it zombies will go after it and make an opening for your people to go through.
Also critically reduces how many zombies you have to kill to reach the safe room.
