Racism and Ignorance

Unfortunately, I experienced a troubling time today, as I innocently tried to blow other cyber-soldiers to smithereens. A fellow COD Black Ops player consistently used the "N" word, "N-i-g-g-e-r" or "N-i-g-g-a". It naturally offended me, as I am a US-born African American citizen; therefore, I respectfully asked the individual to refrain from using those terms or anything that is racially related. He did not. Infact, it seemed that my request only fueled his ignorant and offensive comments. :-(

I went on to mention that if this persists, I will un-Favorite the server, report the incident to the Community and on my personal Blog, and the Admin can deal with the fallout, if they are unable or unwilling to protect my Civil Rights, which happen to be Federally Mandated. Yes, I know that Admins cannot stop a person from saying - typing whatever they wish until after the fact, however, there were Clan Members present at the time, and I do not recall any of them stepping up to squash the situation: possible that some comments of support for my feelings (no, I am not a little girly-man), may have been from a Clan Member, but I do not recall seeing their tag at the time. (I was becoming a little hot by that time. Eventually, I said something to the "Offender", "Mr. Ignoramus", or whatever term suits you, that was unbecomming of a gentleman in return.... though it was not racial, threatening, or profane. I made a statement. I tried to let the person know that Everyone can be ignorant, if PUSHED to be so....an exercise is duality.)

Resolution:

I took some screenshots, saved the Server name - intending to contact the Admin directly, and removed the server from my favorites. I went to play on a different server and went on with my day, however, I said that I would report it, so here I am. I will not, at this time, say the server or Clan, until I receive a response from the Admin. I just wanted to bring some awareness to the situation. It messed up my day completely. I am still upset, but working through it. I hope this is not the norm on-line in the COD Black Ops community. I had usually played Combat Training alone when I have time to shoot, but the past week - after the Storm on the East Coast, I began to use all aspects of the game....as I see that it may not always be available. I have owned this game for over two (2) years. (bought at Walmart for way too much...lol. Fun game though.)

I will post this and other insights to the matter on my Blog. I will contact the Admin. I will contact Steam. I will contact the developers. I will do everything in my power to have the person's account suspended and closed, per the law. I am a citizen, taxpayer, father, and a man. I will not accept such behavior from anyone.

Thank you, "Mr. Ignoramus", for lighting a fire inside of me and giving me more content for my Blog. I hope this reaches others that care about the character of people that we play with, and will prevent others from having to deal with such abuse and ignorance. Going Viral.

Certainly my clan proactively bans anyone who uses racist language as a matter of course. In my opinion though, (c)rap music, which routinely glorifies things such as"putting a cap in a fellow (censored) brain" and "going back to the hood to hang with the (censored) whilst slapping the ho about for a bit" does the Black nation no favours what so ever.

Unfortunately you are going to run into those characters that pretty much say what they want. I chalk it up to inmaturity. After listening to some of them, figure they probably have only one tooth among them. God help our education system !!!

they aren't racist. People just say it to piss you off. If you complain about it, people will just continue saying it even more. Fact of the matter is. We have the right to free speech regardless if it offends you. However server admins can dictate your free speech. If a servers rules that the ADMIN pays for forbids racism,etc then yeah. If they do not give a damn and theres no rules, you cannot force people to change their rules simply to accommodate yourself. What is it with minorities thinking they are special? If you don't like it, find another server. You took entirely too much effort simply because someone called you the N word. In other words, get a life, and stop being such a pansy.

What is also funny is how people casually throw words around these days. Often overused and incorrectly used none the less. "Ignorant" being one of them. It's like idiots learned a new word. Obviously they are just parroting it. Calling someone the N word is not actually racist. Racism means hatred of a race or thinking one race is superior to another. I can drop N bombs all day and still not be racist. What's funny is blacks or whatever other minority of people actually do more harm than good in terms of stopping the crap. You can call a white person "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" "Cracker" "honkey" all day long and we don't care. The second you stop making such a giant deal about someone calling you the N word is the second we'll stop. We use that as an insult because we know you will likely flip your ♥♥♥♥. If it becomes to the point you guys simply aren't affected or phased by that word thats when it will stop.

It's like members of the LGBT community. GLAAD does more harm than good. When you refer to something as being "gay" which doesn't even have to do with homosexuals and they flip their ♥♥♥♥ all that does is annoy people. I wonder when minorities will acknowledge how they react to things does more harm than good and just fuels everything.

Black people call themselves the N word, they call their friends and family the N word. They literally name a song "♥♥♥♥♥♥ in paris" and drop the N bomb every other word. But yet they get mad when they hear white people use it? Riiiight. It's also funny when people throw out the word "ignorant" when you stereotype. Nothing ignorant about it. Stereotypes exist because they hold truth. If you're a minority that only makes up 5, 10, 12% of the population but yet they manage to get themselves stereotyped it's obvious that enough people in that minority is the blame. So you should be blaming your own peeps more so than whoever is stereotyping. It's like feminists. Only 1-2% of the female population are feminists but yet we stereotype them as bra burners, unattractive, insecure, man hating, lesbians,etc. Sorry if your group makes up such a large number, but that is what they are known for. You need to direct your frustration out on your own peeps rather than aim it to the people actually talking crap. /endrant.

I will note that many of you simply missed the point of what I was saying or chose not to really hear me. I was not whinning, but if that is your opinion, you are welcome to it. Original_Gamer understood my point exactly. We are in a private network via the internet, which does have rules. Anyway- Take care all....and do what you do.



PS: I did not contact the Server Admin. I waited until I was not "hot", and reviewed the situation, and decided that that individual was not worth the time and energy I had already used and was not going to allow him/her to waste anymore. I let it go.

Good for you Man!! You are awesome. I like your attitude. I swear all the time while playing not using chat or voice chat so no one hears me. The game does that to me and many others. It causes strong feelings of anger, hate, aggression and retaliation. And it usually goes away after
a time. After yopu stop playing extrem ely violent games.that is.

Wow awesome discussion, I agree with most of your concerns but I must say You can drag a horse to water but cant make him drink..... I think the problem is with the admins not doing there job...(asumming that you were on a server that doesn't allow racism). We tolerate zero racism, and respect all players (except hackers, they gotta go or we will remove you) Hope to see you on our server, and tell em who sent ya,

Realize that even though you might be able to be rational and articulate. The vast majority of readers, and players are 10-16 year olds from single parent (mom) families that will never learn respect. Once you get that, then filter appropriately. Or don't play.

LOL...at least you are keeping it real. I hope you find some cool people that you do not hate. Hate is such a strong word that I try not to use it, but I think I know what you mean. It is not easy to deal with people at times.
