Racism and Ignorance

Unfortunately, I experienced a troubling time today, as I innocently tried to blow other cyber-soldiers to smithereens. A fellow COD Black Ops player consistently used the "N" word, "N-i-g-g-e-r" or "N-i-g-g-a". It naturally offended me, as I am a US-born African American citizen; therefore, I respectfully asked the individual to refrain from using those terms or anything that is racially related. He did not. Infact, it seemed that my request only fueled his ignorant and offensive comments. :-(

I went on to mention that if this persists, I will un-Favorite the server, report the incident to the Community and on my personal Blog, and the Admin can deal with the fallout, if they are unable or unwilling to protect my Civil Rights, which happen to be Federally Mandated. Yes, I know that Admins cannot stop a person from saying - typing whatever they wish until after the fact, however, there were Clan Members present at the time, and I do not recall any of them stepping up to squash the situation: possible that some comments of support for my feelings (no, I am not a little girly-man), may have been from a Clan Member, but I do not recall seeing their tag at the time. (I was becoming a little hot by that time. Eventually, I said something to the "Offender", "Mr. Ignoramus", or whatever term suits you, that was unbecomming of a gentleman in return.... though it was not racial, threatening, or profane. I made a statement. I tried to let the person know that Everyone can be ignorant, if PUSHED to be so....an exercise is duality.)

Resolution:

I took some screenshots, saved the Server name - intending to contact the Admin directly, and removed the server from my favorites. I went to play on a different server and went on with my day, however, I said that I would report it, so here I am. I will not, at this time, say the server or Clan, until I receive a response from the Admin. I just wanted to bring some awareness to the situation. It messed up my day completely. I am still upset, but working through it. I hope this is not the norm on-line in the COD Black Ops community. I had usually played Combat Training alone when I have time to shoot, but the past week - after the Storm on the East Coast, I began to use all aspects of the game....as I see that it may not always be available. I have owned this game for over two (2) years. (bought at Walmart for way too much...lol. Fun game though.)

I will post this and other insights to the matter on my Blog. I will contact the Admin. I will contact Steam. I will contact the developers. I will do everything in my power to have the person's account suspended and closed, per the law. I am a citizen, taxpayer, father, and a man. I will not accept such behavior from anyone.

Thank you, "Mr. Ignoramus", for lighting a fire inside of me and giving me more content for my Blog. I hope this reaches others that care about the character of people that we play with, and will prevent others from having to deal with such abuse and ignorance. Going Viral.

I agree with Vampyer. Use settings to hide chat from you so you won't see them. I believe that "online interactions not rated" meaning anyone can say anything they want at any time. True free speech with absolutely no restrictions. or you could ignore what you see on chat lines or what you here from microphones.

Why is it that poeple always use the words "racism" and "ignorance" either together or interchangeably? Ignorance means "to lack knowledge on a subject", how is thinking that black people are "this" and "that", ignorant? Is it because people have decided that nothing racial can ever be true?

There is alot of people who failed basic computer skills and don't know what the internet is. First off, Steam is a private service on the internet where you have to set up an account and follow basic rules governing that account. Freedom of speech does not apply to private accounts within a company so if you violate those rules they have every right to erase your account. Yes you may say whatever disgusting, narrowminded thing your little pea brains can come up with on the internet but Steam is not the internet. So keep insulting people on Steam and see how far you get until they freeze or delete your account. Bottom line, anti-social people chase people away and cost Steam money so you will lose that "Free Speech" battle.

lol by the way guys Steam will never ban you or any crap like that for swearing in a COD game. Sure if it's a dedicated server you might get a ban off the owner. But in terms of Steam itself, nothing is going to happen. However if you swear on the Steam chat, or via the forums or anything that is actually via Steam, then you're putting yourself at risk of a ban.

Your best bet is to ignore it. The maturity level of some of the players on this game is very low.... I get abuse for just playing well, but it's something I just come around to ignore. You can never stop these comments being made it's just a matter of being the stronger person and ignoring it.

After reading all the post I see that you said some offensive stuff back, see thats how you deal with it. If want more then man up and offer a face to face stand off. See that the real problem here, someone always wants to gripe in a blog yet is not man enough to handle anything otherwise. I am white and I've been offended by other races including my own. How did i hadle it? I give it right back to them. It's also a shame that the net is full of cowards and people that live to far apart to do anything about crying. Personally I would love to whip some punk's rear end 6 days a week. Your Blog and post are as useless as your feelings are to the world over this matter. The world doesn't care about you and your quest is one with no destination. One day you will just accept it happened to you and you will get over it. In the mean you may continue to let it cause you stress.

And one other thing, your hidden behind a computer screen and how would that player have known your skin color? In fact, they would not have know, period. With tha said, his comment was not racist toward you because he made no reference to your skin color since your skin color was not know to him. In fact him could have been a she or even a he/she. maybe they were black? or Hispanic? or Cubin? or Russian? My point is your Civil rights were not violated, maybe in your imagination possibly but none the less it's NO ONE elses job to protect your idea of what you think your rights are. Don't blame a server admin or steam. If you think your rights need protected then protect them yourself since that is your responsibility per Federal Mandate. Go to the courts and file your case if you feel your rights are violated. While your there file one for me since my rights are being violated by coorperate america forcing me to live in this jacked up mixing bowl of pathetic gutless people who force us to bend over while all our money is taken.
