hey i was experiencing the same issue. I dont know how but this is what worked for me.

I installed the Multiplayer, Verified the files for that and then kept trying to launch the non-multiplayer game.

After 2-5 times it gave me the popup for the d3dx install script and worked.

I guess its just finnicky

Had the same issue. I cleared the download cache, verified the game files, downloaded the multiplayer, and ran steam as admin. Then I spammed the play button until it said it was running directX install files, then it worked. Hope this helps.

I was having this problem with BO1. Reinstalled, verified game files, re-downloaded direct X, etc. Nothing seemed to work. Then I tried running another COD game at the same time. Clicked play on Black Ops, and while it was stuck in "updating executable" I clicked play on COD 4 and ran the game. I was then prompted by Black Ops whether I want to run the game in safe-mode or not, clicked no and it worked.

Works fine for me now when I start up Black Ops. Hopefully this helps somebody.

Spamming blackops.exe in the game files worked for me. Just kept clicking until it opened up. Very weird

Installing DirectX from Microsoft fixed this issue for me.

I am having the same issue with Homefront as well. I'm wondering what the work around for that could be, if anyone knows.

Hey there! When I was verifying the files for the SINGLE PLAYER it said they were all there. But when I was verifying the files for the MULTIPLAYER then it said smth was missing and downloaded something, after that the SINGLEPLAYER worked all of the sudden.

Hope this could help!

I got it working somehow, while the SP game was trying to update executable, I've installed dx9 and vcredist with the exe included in game files. It still didn't work, so I installed MP, verified files, spammed again SP for 10 times and it worked after that. I didn't even try to run MP, only SP.

Funnily enough, SP worked but MP not :D. So I went into game folder with BlackOpsMP.exe and DISABLED open as administrator. Then I just selected BlackOpsMP.exe file and held enter for 2-3 seconds (to open as many instances as possible). This somehow worked.... :steamfacepalm:
