Question about Haki and Fruit Users

So how does haki work? Is it automatic or do you have to activate it manually? What does it do?

Also, the campaign tells me that Akainu's ability is naturally superior to Ace's. But is that only lore-wise or does he in fact have a gameplay advantage? When using my turn-into-fire ability, is it only his ice attacks and haki that will be able to damage me? Can I damage him with my fire ability when he is turning-into-ice?

hold down the haki/logia button to activate it
you can do a special movement (dash to enemy) by press haki/logia+jump
for logia type, you can press the button when being attacked to avoid any damage
you can also hold down the button and perform stronger nomal/unique/special attack

It means Ace can't use his logia guard to avoid Akainu's attacks.
