This is by far the best tutorial out that I have watched. I always wanted to know how the professionals molded a weapon and Tim here shows you how it's done. I wish I would have seen this video years ago, I have wasted so much time doing things wrong.

This tutorial is really great, I learned a lot with your tutorial.

I was not at all comfortable with the weapons, but a few days by repeating the actions I have taken care of quickly and I get to a lot of things now.

This is a huge progression, I was teaching at an art school and I can say that : this training you give is a version condensed from a full year of training in a proffessional school. (for 3d modeling and texturing pipeline)

I'm really happy to see the price, it's so honest ... Really, the more advantageous with this tutorial is that it is not only a weapon. It's ALL a pipeline for production and it allows saving a lot of time because we know where to go and what will be the result.

Usually when you get into a job that comes out of our habit, we are afraid of the result. With your tutorial, we know that the result will be great. I strongly recommends this tutorial to everyone who wants to learn. Whatever your level, this tutorial can be followed by anyone, even a young modeler.

Super helpful, I was having a little issue and I got in contact with Tim and he helped me out super quickly.

First of all, I would like to point out that I've actually spent more time on this tutorial than Steam is actually showing...

I'm currently in Part 2.2, giving the lower reciever some detail (as you can see, it's just a block right now, as I'm writting this).

So, let's get into the review:

If I had to describe this tutorial with one word, that word would be: "Wow". This tutorial easily exceeds any tutorial I've seen. It's definitely a lot better than any of the Digital Tutors/3dMotive/3DBuzz tutorials I've seen.
Tim provides everything one could've ask for... He even shows us his shortcuts for certain modifiers that you will need to use throughout this tutorial (thank you so much for those shortcuts, BTW). It teaches you ways of modelling both macro and micro details (letters, numbers, serial numbers, etc), Texture Baking, UV Unwrapping/Mapping (which is pretty hard if you don't know how to approach it), how to create PBR textures (which is a huge plus, since PBR makes the model looks a lot more realistic) and much more.

I've learned so much already. From how to approach certain objects/parts from a different angle to finally knowing what smoothing groups are for. I've been 3D modelling for what, half an year now?- and I can tell you that if this tutorial was available when I started modelling, my skills would be a lot more developed than they are today. This tutorial has tought me certain workflows that I would never even think of, and I haven't even started on both Lower and Upper Receiver (which looks to be the most difficult part). I can't wait to get there are see how Tim approaches those details of the weapon.

I have to give Tim props on his choice in modelling the AKM instead of any other gun. The AKM has a lot of different shapes. Shapes that need to be tackled with different approaches/techniques. He also tells the viewer everything he's doing. This might not seem like something huge, but believe me, it is.
If you've seen a lot of tutorials, you've probably run into the problem of looking at your model for a second, and when you look back that the tutorial, the Tutor has already done something completely different and didn't tell you what it was, forcing you to go back and watching what he did. It's pretty frustrating if it's happening constantly, and makes you not want to continue with the tutorial. This doesn't really happen in this tutorial because Tim's constantly telling you what he's doing.



This is an incredible tutorial. It teaches you everything you need to know about modelling hard surface objects.


I really hope to see more tutorials from Tim Bergholz. If you were on defense about this tutorial, just buy it. It will be the best tutorial you have ever seen.

EDIT: I made a Steamgrid for those of you that use the Grid View like I do and want a visual "warning" to know what parts you've already seen.

This is the best tutorial/workflow on an assault rifle that I have ever seen, while others may be sped up or timelapse, Tim is careful to explain how to model each of the weapon's parts in realtime.

Don't be scared by the fact that the modeling/UVing is in 3DSMAX, you can follow this tutorial from a to z even if you dont use 3dsmax, I'm a Maya modeler myself and I almost finished the modeling parts without a sweat, both programs have about the same tools and same techonologies that drive them.

Best weapon modeling/uving/painting/rendering tut I have ever seen!

It's amazing, I was using Blender for 2 years before. We swithced to CryEngine and for multiple reasons I had no choice but move to 3DS max if I wanted to be effective. Your tutorials is amazing, you gave me all shortcuts I was missing after switched form blender, and a lot of insider information, usually it takes years to find it out on your own but with this course it is just handled to you.

Really nice tutorial.

Perfect tutorial. Learning a lot so far! Just pay attention because he massively use shortcuts and sometimes you might get confused, so i advice you to make a note on a paper of the sortcuts shown in the first 4 videos to future use in the tutorial.

If you want to know how to model, this is the right course.

This series covers a lot of essential principles and methods, explained in a comprehensive and practical fashion.
if you are new to 3DsMax, or have not optimized your workflow yet, then this is the perfect opportunity!

Generally, the tutorial is pretty amazing. Author knows exactly when viewer might have a question and covers entire proccess very thorougly. Despite watching hundreds of similar tutorials on the web, this is the only one truly made UWV unwrapping logical and simple. So generally, I recommend this tutorial to everyone who has a general grasp of 3ds Max and beginner (or higher) skill of box modelling.

But also - what I learned or thought while watching this tutorial:

* If everyone would put such insane, almost autistic attention into modelling and texturing as show in this video, games would each take 50 years to complete. I cannot believe there's a software company boss who pays by the hour and lets any modeller spend such time and work on a single weapon model. But as a tutorial, it's perfect, of course.

* UWV Unwrapping is a thing human beings SHOULD NOT DO. I still don't understand why those guys at Autodesk keep adding tools to do it manually instead of - I don't know - writing a proper algorithm to solve this computational question that's been up and badly handled since 1996. Or if it's really that hard mathematically, maybe let learning computers get crack at this?
When author of this video started unwrapping various bolts and nuts, it seriously made me cringe. I repeat, letting humans still do this manually is serious waste of talent and lifetime.

* Physically-based texturing and amazing procedural systems like Substance Painter demonstrated in this tutorial probably single-handedly wipe most of knowledge of old-school modellers. This tutorial hardly uses any photoshop at all. But I think it's good. This tutorial sets a good case to prove this.

* Doing basically everything using shortcuts makes cramped, horrible case of failed UI design (of 3ds Max) that's only gone worse, year by year -- almost tolerable. As author does and encourages watchers to do.

So yeah, I highly recommend to watch this if you have any interest in box-modelling, modelling in general or curiosity how far we've come in tools and tehnique past 15 years.
