Even on watching the replay, and listening very closely to just before i die (by a basic skull) it made literally zero noise. Like it didn't make any noise at all. Is this a bug? Sometimes they make noise, but it seems like sometimes they make zero noise
there were test patches m4tt pushed a while back where skull2 and skull3 audio were slightly raised, but it honestly sounded way worse in the mix, and didn't even help when we were testing it. the truth is, vision and timing accounts for 98% of gameplay decisions in devil daggers. the only sounds that provide significantly beneficial information is the spider1 spawn sound, and the gigapede emerging rumble. it's not unheard of for players to crank the game audio to 0.1, put loud music on, and still play really well.
you can actually mess with the 'loudness' property of any particular sound file with the modding tools on devildaggers.info. I tried making small tweaks, but honestly i think they balanced the audio pretty well. when you start making skulls audible through the shotgun, even just a little bit, it makes the shotgun feel so wimpy
You need to jump. Jumping with good rhythm massively increases your movement speed. You seemed to be getting easily overwhelmed because of a combination of slow movement keeping you from reaching your targets quickly, and panicky movements / really really high mouse sensitivity. Having slower, more deliberate mouse movements will improve your gameplay.
